Women’s Soccer Scores Late Goal to Force Tie Against Hamilton, 1-1

CLINTON, NY. – Women's soccer played to a tie against a talented Hamilton Continentals team Sunday in Clinton, New York. The two teams had multiple scoring chances throughout, but Wesleyan looked like the better team, recording 25 shots to Hamilton's 10. Out of those 25 shots that the Cards were able to produce, 12 of them were shots on goal compared to the Continentals three. Despite the great differential in shots and shots on goal, Wesleyan was only able to put across one goal. The tie puts the Cardinals record at 2-3-2 (1-2-1 NESCAC) and Hamilton at 3-1-3 (1-1-3 NESCAC).

This has been a historically even matchup between these two NESCAC schools over the years. Wesleyan holds a record of 3-5-4 against the Continentals with all three of those wins coming over the past four matchups. The NESCAC foes matched up two times last year in Wesleyan's historic 2021 season, where the Cardinals handled Hamilton by multiple scores in both matchups. First with a 3-0 victory in a regular season matchup, then 2-0 in the NESCAC Tournament semifinals.

It was a much closer contest in 2022, with the two sides playing to a tie going into the half. The Cardinals put pressure on the Continentals defense immediately, producing two shot attempts within the first minute and a half. While the Wesleyan offense was producing multiple scoring chances in the first half, the Cardinals defense was holding the Continentals without a shot for the first 27 minutes. The stout defensive effort was anchored by Sarah Hammond '22 in goal. Hammond and the back line held a shutout through the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Wesleyan turned up the offensive pressure even more, manufacturing 14 shots. However, it was Hamilton who put through the first goal of the game. The Continentals started the 2nd half with an immediate scoring chance. Katie Moses ripped a shot that was turned away, resulting in a Hamilton corner. The Wesleyan defense was able to turn away the corner, but Hamilton came back down just a minute later to put one in the back of the net. Erin Rayhill beat Hammond off the pass by Taryn Gillis.

Immediately after the Continentals score, the Wesleyan offense was back on the attack. They recorded five shots over the next seven minutes along with a corner, but were unable to put through the equalizer. Then in the 61st minute, Grace Devanny '23 ripped a shot from outside the box that hit the crossbar. Kate Hausladen '23 darted for the rebound and one-timed a shot passed Nieve Tonna to even the game at one.
Over the next 29 minutes, the Cardinals produced six more shots, but they were all turned away by Tonna and the Continental defense to force the 1-1 tie.

Wesleyan will move on to play another NESCAC team in Middlebury Saturday October 1st at Jackson Field.
