Three Cardinals make quarterfinal runs in singles play

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Several deep runs in the ITA Regional Championships for the Wesleyan women's tennis team came up just short of semifinal and final appearances in the two-day weekend tournament held at Williams College.

Highlighting the weekend was the semifinal run from the All-American doubles team of Sasha Gaeth '23 and Caitlyn Ferrante '23, who won three matches before being bounced in the semifinals by MIT's Sarah Pertsemlidis and Jay Lu, 8-6. Gaeth and Ferrante defeated teams from Trinity (Ella Baker, Angelina Shyltsyna), Williams (Mia Thomann, Katherine Orgielewicz) and Amherst (Katie Hart, Amy Cui) on their way to the semifinal round.

In the doubles portion, Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and Katie Fleischman '23 recorded two wins before a loss in the round of 16. Mohsen-Breen and Fleischman defeated Curry's Sasha Borkov and Sophia Wiernusz 8-0 in the round of 64 before an 8-7 win in the round of 32 over Williams' Yuu Ishikawa and Annabelle Siegel. Their run came to an end in the round of 16 against Bates' Joanna Atwater and Ally Friedman in an 8-5 defeat.

Kristina Yu '22 and Sarah Youngberg '26 also advanced to the round of 16, defeating Smith's Clara Goshgarian and Lili Goshgarian 8-1 in the round of 32 before losing to Isabella Hartman and Josephine Kimball of Trinity 8-3.

The singles portion saw three Cardinals advance to the quarterfinal round, with each earning three wins along the way to their quarterfinal appearance. Yu started with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Sara Fernandez of MIT in the round of 64 before following with victories over Rebecca Lim of Tufts (6-1, 6-1) and Anna Lardner of Middlebury (6-2, 6-3) before eventually falling to Pertsemlidis 6-4, 7-5.

Youngberg made a deep run in her first collegiate action, recording a 6-0, 6-1 win over Colby-Sawyer's Grace Carpenter to kick start her tournament. She followed with a 7-6, 2-6, 10-4 win over Middlebury's Lulu Wu and a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ally Friedman of Bates in the round of 16. Her run came to an end in a dramatic match, losing to Wililams' Zhenghui Tian 5-7, 6-3, 7-10 in the quarters.
