MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan men's hockey was able to take down NESCAC foe Bowdoin Friday night at Spurrier-Snyder Rink, 5-3. The Cardinals offense has been rolling all season, however in the last four games Wesleyan has put together a spectacular 19 goals. This is their second straight game with five goals, their 5
th such game through 11 games. Wesleyan improves to 8-2-1 (5-1-1 NESCAC) on the year, while Bowdoin drops to 8-3-1 (4-3-1 NESCAC).
The opened period seemed as though it was going to be a feeling out period for both teams, as the teams reached the dying minutes with the score deadlocked at zero. One power play from each team had come and gone and there were less than four minutes to go in the period when the Polar Bears struck first. Luke Wheeler reeled off two straight shots that were turned away by
Erik Voloshin '24 before Jimmy Duffy was able to track down the rebound and cash in to give Bowdoin a 1-0 advantage. Just two minutes later the Polar Bears managed to score again, and suddenly the first period had some action. This time it was Ethan Kimbell who came through off the pass from Chris Brown to go up 2-0 with less than two minutes to go in the period. Just when it seemed like Bowdoin was going to have huge momentum going into the first intermission the Cardinals offense was able to muster their first goal of the game. On the power play,
Jake Lachance '23 carried the puck eventually feeding
Colin Cobb '23 who cut the deficit in half.
The Polar Bears came out with a flurry of shots to start the period, but it was the Cardinals who managed the first goal of the second period. Lachance was involved once again, this time as the beneficiary of a
Henry Carlson '25 pass to even the score at two just eight minutes into the period. Wesleyan went on their third power play of the game less than a minute later. They would capitalize on this chance, with
Daniel Lurie '26 one-timing a shot after the Cardinals were able to work the puck around, to beat the Polar Bears' goalie. Wesleyan wasn't done just yet in the third, netting one more to head into the final period with a 4-2 lead.
Parker Sondag '26 beat Alex Kozic this time, and Wesleyan had a two-goal lead going into the final 20 minutes.
Wesleyan worked the puck around nicely again on a power play to open the third period to put through their 5
th goal of the game.
Mike Dunderdale '23 fed
Owen Sweet '25 for this one and the Cardinals had their largest lead of the game. After two minutes of four-on-four, the Polar Bears were able to score as both players were leaving their respective penalty boxes. Jack Gilligan took a shot from the point that beat Voloshin and trimmed the deficit to two with six minutes to play. The Polar Bears had another power play just minutes later, pulling the goalie for a six on four, but the Wesleyan penalty kill did its job and the Cardinals were able to come out with another win.
The five Wesleyan goals were scored by five different players. Nine Cardinals contributed at least one point. Lachance had the big game for the Cardinals netting a goal while dishing out two assists.
Liam Donelan '23 had two assists as well for Wesleyan, while leading the team with two blocked shots. Voloshin was able to make 39 saves, while Bowdoin's Kozic made 19.
Wesleyan will return to the ice Saturday afternoon at Spurrier-Snyder Rink where they will take on another NESCAC foe in Colby.
