MIDDLETOWN, CT.- The Wesleyan women's hockey team was defeated by nationally ranked Amherst Friday night, 6-0. The fourth ranked Mammoths scored three goals in both the second and third period to reach their total. The six goals allowed by the Cardinals is the most they have surrendered since the 2019-20 season, when Williams managed seven scores up in Williamstown. Wesleyan moves to 9-5-1 (3-4 NESCAC). No. 4 Amherst extends their win streak to 14 with the win, sitting at 15-1 (8-1 NESCAC) on the year.
It was a very competitive first period of action, with the score ultimately ending in a zero-to-zero tie after the first 20 minutes. The defenses from both teams came to play, combining to block 12 shots. The Cardinals blocked nine themselves, with two each from
Jenna Stevens '24 and
Jenna Rekoske '24.
Rei Halloran '23 did her part when she was tested in the first period, making all five saves on shots that reached her. The Cardinals outshot the Mammoths in the period seven to five. The best chance of the opening period was an Amherst power play, but the Wesleyan penalty kill held them without a shot on net.
The Cardinals opened the second period with their first power play opportunity of the night. The Mammoths showed why they are one of the better penalty killing units in the country, holding Wesleyan without a shot on goal over those two minutes. The Card immediately went on another power play, but it was Amherst who scored. The Mammoths scored their 5
th short handed goal of the year (5
th in the country), to give them the second period lead. Less than four minutes later they added yet another short-handed goal. A long outlet pass from Leslie Schwartz found the stick of Rylee Glennon who worked her way past the Wesleyan defense before beating Halloran. The Mammoths weren't done, adding one more goal to extend their lead to three going into the final period. This time it was on the power play, with Glennon sniping a wrist shot into the back of the net after the Mammoths worked the puck around.
In the third period the 4
th ranked team in the country added a few insurance goals. They opened with their 2
nd straight power play goal of the game just minutes in. Maeve Reynolds cleaned up a rebound right in front of the net and the Mammoths had their 4
th goal of the game. A minute after a Wesleyan power play chance, Amherst scored number five. An interception in the attacking zone eventually turned into a deflection in front of the net that snuck past Halloran. The Mammoths added one more goal inside the final minute of the game to reach the final score of 6-0.
Glennon had two goals for the Mammoths. Stevens blocked three shots for the Cardinals. The Mammoths outshot Wesleyan 28-22. Halloran and Natalie Stott each had 22 saves for their respective teams.
