MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – After hanging in with the league-leading and No. 17 nationally ranked Trinity Bantams for the first half, the Bantams went on a 13-0 run to start the second half which proved enough in a 59-43 win over the Wesleyan women's basketball team. Wesleyan (7-10, 1-3 NESCAC) sees their two-game win streak come to an end while the Bantams (16-1, 4-0 NESCAC) continue what is already the best season in program history.
With the Bantams' leading scorer and rebounder Reilly Campbell in first half foul trouble, Trinity struggled to find offense as the Cardinals' zone defense gave the visitors all sorts of problems early on. In the first quarter, Wesleyan held Trinity to just nine points on 18.2 percent shooting (4-for-22) but the Bantams still managed to outscore the Cardinals in the frame thanks to a 7-2 advantage in turnovers.
Trinity managed to find some open shots and went 7-for-13 in the second quarter, including a 7-for-9 showing on two-point field goals, but no free throws and four missed three-pointers without a make kept the door open for Wesleyan who managed to match the Bantams' point total in the stanza to trail by just one at the break.
With Campbell now back in the lineup, Trinity started to put everything together and rattled off the 13-0 run to take a 14-point lead with just over four minutes left in the quarter. Wesleyan scored 10 points in a three-minute span to calm the Trinity run but still trailed 42-32 after three.
The game was put away in the fourth as Trinity maintained a double-digit advantage for the entire quarter, seeing the game out behind seven points from Hannah Marzo in the quarter.
Tori DaCosta '25 led the way for the Cardinals with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds which also matched her career-high. This marked DaCosta's seventh double-double of the season.
Brooke Guiffre '23 and
Alana Jones '24 each had 10 points to join DaCosta in double figures.
Marzo led all players with 13 points in this one while adding four assists, three steals, and three rebounds. Emma Wax went for 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists while Campbell tallied nine points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocks in just 21 minutes. Trinity held a +18 advantage in rebounding (55-37) while the Bantams dished out assists on 23 of their 24 made baskets.
Wesleyan has its final non-conference game of the season up next, as the Cardinals welcome Lesley to SIlloway Gymnasium at 5:00 PM on Monday.
