CLINTON, N.Y. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision at the hands of No. 7 nationally ranked Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (9-8-1, 3-7 NESCAC) drop their sixth straight game while the Continentals (14-3-1, 8-2 NESCAC) remain in second place in the league standings.
After seeing the Continentals score seven goals last night, the Cardinals did well to keep Hamilton off the scoresheet through more than 30 minutes of play until a seeing-eye breakout pass from Sami Quackenbush deep in the defensive end found the stick of Hyla Mosher. Now on an odd-man rush, it was Abby Smith who knocked in a rebound goal to make it 1-0 Hamilton.
Wesleyan had opportunities to tie the score, generating 11 shots in the second period and nine more in the third, but none got past Mac Donovan in net as the Continental goaltender made 29 saves in the shutout victory.
With the deficit still at just one goal, Wesleyan took some late penalties and paid the price as Hamilton netted two power play goals just 2:29 apart to win it by the three-goal margin. Hamilton took a 2-0 lead as the puck worked its way around the edges of the Cardinals' defensive end before Abby Kuhns let a shot fly from distance that made its way through traffic.
Kuhns was again involved, playing the role of distributor at the top of the zone, finding Maura Holden open at the top of the right faceoff dot. With time to shoot, Holden lined up a wrister that got past
Rei Halloran '23 and put the game away.
Halloran made 28 saves in net for the Cardinals who were outshot 31-29 for the game.
Brooke Keough '23 led the team with two blocked shots while three Wesleyan skaters tied for the team-lead with four shots.
Wesleyan continues to play away from home, with a weekend trip to Middlebury on tap.
