No. 14 Volleyball Rolls Past Conn. College on Senior Night

Cardinals improve to 6-0 at home, having dropped just one set in Silloway Gym all season

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – After celebrating the five-member senior class prior to the match, the No. 14 ranked Wesleyan volleyball honored their seniors with a dominant performance as the Cardinals swept Connecticut College (25-15, 25-13, 25-14) in an all-around brilliant display. Wesleyan (14-1, 7-0 NESCAC) moves to 6-0 at home in 2023, with all but one of those wins coming via a sweep, while the Cardinals have dropped just three sets in NESCAC play. The Camels (9-8, 2-6 NESCAC) have lost four of their last five matches.

Wesleyan outclassed the Camels in all phases as the Cardinals hit .314 for the match with 44 kills on 102 attempts while seeing Conn. hit just .036 with 21 errors and just 25 kills. The Cardinals also finished with 55 digs, seeing a +18 advantage compared to 37 for the Camels. Wesleyan improves to 16-4 all-time against Conn. at home while the Cardinals have won eight consecutive matches dating back to 2016 against their in-state league foe.

Sophia Lindus '26 led the Cardinals with 14 kills, hitting .310 on her 29 attempts. The sophomore hit a career milestone, recording her 500th kill to become just the third Cardinal in team history to reach 500 career kills in their sophomore season.

Kathryn Morton '24 shined on senior night, totaling 10 kills on 15 attempts with no errors, hitting .667 while adding four digs and three total blocks. Morton's .667 attack percentage is her second-highest single-game mark of the season. Mariko Tanaka '24 finished with six kills while Kate Long '24 also had six kills with three blocks and a .333 attack percentage.

Maya Lopansri '25 served as the Cardinal setter for all but two points in the entire match, finishing with 34 assists, three digs, two kills, and two service aces. Bianca Ortiz '24 had one of her best matches of the season, totaling 23 digs which is a new career-high for the senior in a three-set match. Ortiz brings her NESCAC-leading dig total to 300 for the season.

Wesleyan came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set, hitting .368 with 18 kills as a team. The Camels hung in, seeing the score tied at 6 apiece, but the Cardinals ripped off a 6-0 run and never looked back. Morton was big in the run, registering three of her four kills in the set. From what was a 6-6 score line, Wesleyan led 17-8 and ultimately closed out a 25-15 set win.

The second set played out much like the first, with Wesleyan hitting .385 while Conn. had eight attack errors in the set. Wesleyan led 13-8 before scoring five unanswered to open up a double-digit point lead, with Lindus featuring heavily in the run as the sophomore landed three straight kills. Morton and Long closed the set with consecutive kills and the Cardinals won the second set 25-13.

After seeing Wesleyan jump out to a 11-4 lead in the third set, Conn. fought back with a 6-2 run to close the gap to a three-point margin. But two crucial runs from Wesleyan, first a four-point unanswered streak, followed by a 5-0 run, put the set away. The Camels had more errors (nine) than kills (seven) in the set, as Wesleyan finishing off a dominant win.

Wesleyan finishes up a NESCAC home weekend with a visit from Bowdoin on Saturday at 2 PM. The Polar Bears have been a thorn in the Cardinals' side in recent season, with Bowdoin having won four straight meetings dating back to 2019.
