MIDDLETOWN, CT. – As the seconds wound down in the second overtime period, the No. 4 Wesleyan women's soccer team and No. 5 Trinity College were still tied 1-1 and headed for a penalty kick shootout in the NESCAC quarterfinal to determine who would advance to the conference semifinals. Eight players each stepped up to the box, but Wesleyan found the back of the net seven times with
Waverly Meyers '26 sealing the 1-1 (7-6) victory at Jackson Field in front of a Homecoming Weekend crowd on Saturday afternoon.
Scoring her fourth goal in four games,
Katie O'Connell '25 got the Cardinals onto the scoreboard in the 59
th minute after the Cardinals and the Bantams were held scoreless through the first half.
The Bantams controlled the offensive play of the match in the first half, outshooting the Cardinals 6-4. The Bantams had an early opportunity to score around the 16-minute mark as Sofia Quijada barelled down the field but
Tori Rideau-Winds '26 made a quick tackle to fend her off. Rideau-Winds made a near identical save a minute later on the Bantams.
Heading out of the half with no tally, the Cardinals picked up the pace on the offensive end by putting two shots on Mariana Cournoyer before O'Connell's goal. Awarded a free kick after a foul by Elena Lindonen,
Kerenza Leahey '27 took the kick and found O'Connell in the middle of a scrum in front of Cournoyer and landed the ball in the back of the net.
At 69:05 the Bantams tied the game up at one and got a final solid chance at winning the game with 30 seconds remaining in regulation off a corner kick.
As the abnormal October heat beat down at Jackson Field, both overtime periods saw no shots from either team on goal and would send the game to a penalty kick shootout.
Molly Brumbach '26, in goal for the Cardinals, made two saves on Quijada and Gabby Grattan as Nina Sharp, Katelyn Charette, Emma Almoney, Jill Fisher, Anna Franceschi, and Laurel Iorio all landed their shots.

Lina Rodriguez '24,
Audrey Lavey '23,
Lily Jebejian '26, Leahey,
Maria Utz '27,
Serena Sink '24, and Meyers all made it past Cournoyer to send the Cardinals to the semifinal round. Leahey's shot made a short detour to the net after loudly hitting the goal post.
Brumbach made a total of eight saves in goal to Cournoyer's 11 for the Bantams.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Nov. 4 in the NESCAC semifinals. Opponent to be determined after No. 6 Connecticut and No. 3 Bowdoin compete Sunday, Oct. 28.
