MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's squash team earned an 8-1 win at home on Saturday afternoon over Brown in the team's season-opening match. This marks the first win for Wesleyan (1-0) over Brown since 2013, snapping a five-match losing streak including a 7-2 defeat in Providence last season.
The Cardinals certainly earned the victory as Wesleyan landed just two 3-0 sweeps on the day, going 6-0 in four and five set matches on the day.
Nimai Kini '26 and
Dhairya Shah '27 picked up wins via sweeps on the day, with Kini defeating Harrison Yang 11-9, 11-8, 13-11 at #1 while Shah won on his collegiate debut with a 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 triumph over Dawson Lin at #3.
In a match that lasted nearly an hour,
Preston Crawford '25 dung in and earned a thrilling come-from-behind win over Will McLaren at #4. Crawford found himself down 2-1 in sets (7-11, 11-6, 8-11) before earned consecutive sets that went into extra points, 15-13 and 19-17, to capture the victory.
Toby Goldston '24 earned a 3-1 win (11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7) at #2 over Samuel Lew while
Jack Lungstrum '25 also won by a 3-1 margin (9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9) as he defeated Vedant Gupta at #5.
Morgan Shatzman '25 was another 3-1 winner, defeating Andrew Willwerth at #6 (11-7, 11-13, 11-8, 11-2).
In another five-setter,
Zack Idinopulos '26 held off Tim Cassidy for a win at #8 in a match that lasted 47 minutes (14-12, 5-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-5).
Sumer Singh Ahluwalia '27 picked up his first collegiate win at #9, defeating Lily Seckendort (11-4, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5). The lone defeat on the day for the Cardinals came at #7 with
Cole Zetterquist '24 suffering a 3-0 defeat (9-11, 8-11, 6-11) to Rachel Mashek.
Wesleyan returns to the courts tomorrow morning for the first of two home matches on Sunday. The Cardinals start against No. 16 ranked Middlebury at 10 AM before hosting Vassar at 3 PM.
