Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s hockey falls to UMass Boston, 1-0

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan men's ice hockey team wrapped up a weekend of back-to-back games with a 1-0 loss to UMass Boston on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup that was led by DJ Dixon '24 off the draw, Daniel Lurie '26, and Erik Voloshin '24 in goal from Spurrier-Snyder Rink.

Rebounding from a 3-0 loss on Saturday to Curry, the Cardinals put down a cleaner game against the Beacons with Voloshin in goal. The Cardinals controlled the momentum swings for the majority of the first period as the shots on goal ran even, the Cardinals winning the shot differential as they connected solid passes in the Beacons' zone. While Nolan Roche '27 and Jeremey Abraham '24 controlled the face-off possession with three draws each, Parker Sondag, Ethan Davidson, and Dixon rattled three shots against Beacons goaltender Sam Best.

The Beacons returned in the second period ready to control the puck possession, gaining several one-on-one opportunities as they rushed the Cardinals through their own end. At 13:33 Voloshin made a sliding save on Chris Repmann, getting both pads down at the right post to maintain the scoreless game to that point. Following Voloshin's save Lurie and Tiger Bjornlund '24 managed a shift to give the Cardinals a chance down low against the Beacons as Lurie had a team-leading four attempts on Best through the second period.

While Lurie was on target for two more shots in an offensive effort to get the Cardinals on the board, the Beacons instead scored at 5:51. Jack Mortson earned the tally on a quick passing attempt on the attack, Jakob Teply, and Grady Friedman with the assists. With little more than a minute remaining in regulation, Patrick Morrissey '25 redirected the puck back into the fray from the post after bolting down the ice to avoid an empty-net goal by the Beacons as the Cardinals opted for the extra attacker.

Dixon won 16 draws off the face-off and was followed by Abraham with 11 wins of his own.

Voloshin made a career-high 45 saves in net on 46 shots faced. Best was good for 35 saves in goal for the Beacons.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Dec. 1, when they host Amherst in NESCAC action beginning at 7 p.m.
