WASHINGTON, D.C. & LANCASTER, Pa. – The Wesleyan men's squash team was defeated by No. 25 ranked Navy, Franklin & Marshall, and Denison this weekend in matches played away from home. The Cardinals (2-4) lost to the Midshipmen 6-3 on Friday night in D.C. and were defeated by Franklin & Marshall 9-0 and Denison 5-4 on Saturday in Lancaster.
Facing the No. 25 ranked Midshipmen, the Cardinals took a pair of wins over Navy including
Nimai Kini '26 at #1 in a five-setter while Zach Idinopulos '26 won his match at #8 in three sets. Kini came storming back in his match, coming from two sets down, to win the last three sets 11-8, 11-9, 11-5 to claim the win over Henry Sparkman. Idinopulos needed just 22 minutes to win in straight sets over Holden Woodward 11-6, 13-11, 11-5. Three of the remaining matches went to four sets as
Toby Goldston '24,
Dhairya Shah '27, and
Morgan Shatzman '25 each won a set in their respective matches.
Wesleyan was handed a 9-0 defeat by the Diplomats on Saturday morning, with Franklin & Marshall winning all nine matches in straight sets. Kini won 22 points in his match at #1 to lead the Cardinals while
Sumer Singh Ahluwalia '27 and Idinopulos each won 19 total points at #8 and #9, respectively.
Attempting to end the weekend on a high note, the Cardinals were locked in a close battle against the Big Red in a neutral site match played on Saturday afternoon. In a match that featured three five-setters, Denison came out on top in a 5-4 win.
Preston Crawford '25 landed a 3-0 win at #4 over Charlie Fenwick (11-7, 11-9, 11-6) while Shah won his match at #3 over Ibrahim Bekhiet 3-1 (3-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6). Wesleyan then won a pair of five-set matches with Shatzman defeating Chase Lenfest (11-8, 11-5, 6-11, 10-12, 11-6) while
Cole Zetterquist '24 was victorious at #7 in a big comeback win over Ross Falcon (6-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-8). The Cardinals just couldn't pull out a fifth win as Goldston and
Jack Lungstrum '25 lost in four sets while Idinopulos was defeated in five sets at #8.
Wesleyan has one remaining match in 2023, with the Cardinals set to host Conn. College on Wednesday at 6:30 PM.
