Balanced Attack Leads Men’s Basketball Past Colby-Sawyer, 96-68

Eight Cardinals net at least seven points in a dominating win

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Four Cardinals reached double figures in scoring while eight had at least seven points, leading the Wesleyan men's basketball team past Colby-Sawyer in a 96-68 home win on Wednesday night. Wesleyan (6-2) rebounds following Saturday's home defeat to Williams while the Chargers (4-5) have lost three of their past four games.
 
In a contest the Cardinals led wire-to-wire, Wesleyan's offense was ultra-efficient, shooting 56.3 percent (40-71 FG) overall for the game and 63.8 percent (37-for-58) on two-point attempts. As a team, Wesleyan dished out 32 assists on 40 made field goals and committed just eight turnovers, and made over 72 percent of their free throw attempts.
 
Shane Regan '25 led the way with a game-high 18 points (8-11 FG) while he dished out a career-high seven assists. Sam Pohlman '26 was nearly perfect, going 7-for-8 shooting on his way to a season-high 15 points with four assists and four rebounds. Ben Lyttle '27 came off the bench and scored 14 (7-11 FG) while Jackson Cormier '26 netted 10 points. Fritz Hauser '26, Jared Langs '25, and Nicky Johnson '25 all finished with seven points while Johnson added eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
 
It was 10-0 Cardinals in a flash as Regan received a pass from Hauser off the tip-off, scoring just three seconds in as Wesleyan held the lead for the remainder of play. Langs scored back-to-back baskets, the second of which being a three-point play, and Cormier capped the 10-0 run with a three on the wing.
 
Colby-Sawyer fought back, closing the deficit to four on an 8-2 run, and held on for 4+ minutes before a 11-0 Cardinal run swung momentum completely in favor of the home side. Pohlman started the run with a three and Lyttle threw down a dunk on the fast break as Wesleyan went ahead 39-24. The Cardinal lead grew to as many as 19 points before the halftime buzzer sounded with Wesleyan out in front 49-30.
 
The second half was more of the same as the Cardinal lead swelled to 20 points just 2:12 in and an 8-1 run made it 71-44 with 11:32 remaining. Wesleyan led by as many as 35 points in the second half, with the exclamation point being a made three from Jacob Pofsky '25 as the junior guard's first basket of the season made it 94-59 Cardinals.
 
Wesleyan's final home game of 2023 is slated for Saturday as the Cardinals play host to Bridgewater State for a 2 PM tip-off in what is the Cardinals' Salute to Service game honoring local veterans.
