NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a hot start that saw the Cardinals lead by as many as six in the first quarter, the Wesleyan women's basketball team was outscored by 11 in the second quarter and couldn't recover, falling to Albertus Magnus 83-72 on the road on Wednesday night. The Cardinals (4-3) drop their second straight game and lose for the first time on the road this season, while the Falcons (7-3) are winners of three straight.
Wesleyan's hot start saw the Cardinals lead 22-16 with 1:49 left in the opening quarter as
Olivia Quinn '26,
Felicia Fongemie '27, and
Maggie Lee '23 combined to score 20 of the 22 points for Wesleyan in that span. As a team, Wesleyan made three three-pointers in the first quarter alone, including a pair from Lee, but the Falcons finished strong with eight unanswered points as Albertus led 24-22 after one.
The second quarter is where the game was largely decided as the Falcons outscored Wesleyan 23-12, shooting 8-for-14 (57.1 FG%) compared to just 5-for-17 (29.4 FG%) for the Cardinals in the frame. Foul trouble began to set in for the Cardinals as five players had at least two fouls, including three each for Quinn and
Kate King '27, as Albertus held a 47-34 lead at halftime.
The Falcons led 56-38 nearing the midway point of the third quarter before Wesleyan scored nine answered points to cut the Albertus lead down to single digits at 56-47.
Tori DaCosta '25 started the mini rally attempt with the first five points in the 9-0 Cardinal run. Wesleyan continued to push, lowering the deficit to eight points on a Fongemie three-point play with just over a minute left in the third, but five unanswered points to end the quarter restored a double-digit lead for the Falcons.
A 13-point lead at the start of the fourth proved too much to overcome for Wesleyan who managed to trim the deficit down to nine points, but no closer for the remainder of play.
Four Cardinals finished with double-digit point totals including a team-high 19 from Fongemie who shot 9-of-16 from the floor with six rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes. Quinn finished with 16 points (6-12 FG) and five rebounds in just 21 minutes before fouling out. DaCosta tallied 13 points and nine rebounds while Lee scored 10 with seven rebounds and three assists.
