Men’s Squash Takes Fourth Place in Conroy Cup at National Team Tournament

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's squash team competed in the Conroy Cup (D Division) at the National Intercollegiate Team Tournament over the weekend at the Rosenbaum Squash Center. The Cardinals (7-12) won their opening match against Haverford 9-0 before suffering defeats to Bowdoin and Navy to finish the competition in fourth place.
 
Wesleyan 9, Haverford 0 | Results
 
The Cardinals managed their fourth 9-0 sweep of the season in the opening round showdown against Haverford. Wesleyan earned six 3-0 decisions in the match while Abhinav Gupta '25 battled to a 3-2 win at #3 to seal the 9-0 win.
 
The bottom of the lineup (#5-#9) all managed to win by 3-0 scores, while Shanay Sanghavi '23 and Toby Goldston '24 also won by 3-0 decisions at #2 and #4, respectively. Ethan Yan '26 took down Benjamin Schiltz 11-3, 11-7, 12-10 at #6 while Jack Lungstrum defeated John Collins at #7 (12-10, 11-5, 11-9). Morgan Shatzman '25 was victorious in just 20 minutes at #8, defeating Matt Sullivan 11-4, 11-8, 11-5 while Preston Crawford '24 won at #9 (11-3, 11-5, 11-8).
 
Goldston finished off Peter Lehv at #4 in just 14 minutes by a score of 11-8, 11-7, 11-7. Sanghavi scored a 14-12 victory in the opening game which carried him to a 3-0 triumph at #2 over Noah Tunis. John Sutherby '23 pulled out a tight 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 11-8 decision to defeat Kai Schinaman at #5 while Gupta overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 5-11, 3-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-8 at #3. Nimai Kini '26 won the third game after dropping the first two before Quinton Ayres Crawford was forced to retire, handing Kini the win at #1.
 
No. 25 Bowdoin 8, Wesleyan 1 | Results
 
The seven-point margin was no indication as to how close the Cardinals came to an upset win over Bowdoin. Four of the nine matches went into a deciding fifth set, three of which were won by the Polar Bears. Goldston, Shatzman, and Crawford each suffered 3-2 defeats while Yan pulled out a 8-11, 11-4, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7 win at #6 to account for the lone Wesleyan point. Sanghavi battled at #2, losing each game by just two points in a 14-12, 11-9, 13-11 loss to Deven Kanwal.
 
Navy 6, Wesleyan 3 | Results
 
In a rematch of what was the season-opener for the Cardinals back on November 19, Wesleyan again suffered close defeats on several courts in a loss to the Midshipmen. Lungstrum pulled out a thriller at #7, defeating Benjamin Balser 7-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-6, 11-7 in a win that tied the score at 3-3.
 
Navy then went on a 3-0 run to close out the match with the three-point victory. Thomas Rankin dispatched Sutherby 15-13 in the fourth game to win 3-1. Lucas Spiro took down Goldston in a match that lasted nearly an hour, with Spiro winning 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 5-11 at #4. Gupta lost by a two-point margin in all three games in a 3-0 loss to Henry Sparkman at #3.
 
Wesleyan finishes up the 2022-23 season next weekend at the CSA Individuals Tournament.
