MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – In their final home match of the season, the Wesleyan men's squash team was dealt a close 5-4 lose at the hands of No. 24 nationally ranked Hamilton on Sunday afternoon. Wesleyan (6-10) concludes their regular season and now await news of a berth into the NESCAC Championship tournament next weekend. The Continentals (4-7) have won four of their past six matches.
A very tight match throughout featured four matches that went into a fifth set, as just two of the nine total matches were decided by 3-0 sweeps.
Hamilton jumped out to a 3-0 lead with wins coming at #7 and #9 (3-0 sweeps) as well as a four-set win at #2. Wesleyan began their comeback bid with victories coming at #5 and #6.
Toby Goldston '24 won the fourth set at #5 that required extra points to defeat Ashby Howard 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 13-11.
Ethan Yan '25 finished his match with a 11-9, 9-11, 13-11, 11-5 win over Atreyus Bhavsar at #6.
With the score now 3-2 in favor of Hamilton, all four remaining matches went into a deciding set. Needing two match victories, the Continentals sealed the team win by way of Tate Burgin at #8 and Waleed Nisar at #3, as the duo won their respective matches to give Hamilton five team points.
The Cardinals continued to fight despite the team defeat, with five-set wins coming from
Nimai Kini '26 at #1, as the first-year won a nearly hour-long match over Tobey Suratt 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9.
Shanay Sanghavi '23 also won his final home match in a 58-minute battle with Williams Rice that ended with a Sanghavi victory 11-6, 11-2, 7-11, 4-11, 11-7.
Prior to the start of the match, Wesleyan honored it's four-member senior class before their final home match. The Class of 2023 included Sanghavi, Sutherby,
Milo Supasorn '23, and
Sebastian Kulkarni '23.
