CLAREMONT, Ca. – Venturing across the country, the No. 7 nationally ranked Wesleyan women's lacrosse team defeated a ranked opponent for the second time in three days as the Cardinals dispatched No. 20 Pomona-Pitzer, 14-6, on Monday night. Wesleyan is 4-0 for the fifth time in the last seven seasons while the Sagehens (6-1) suffer their first defeat in 2023.
Despite a hectic travel schedule the past four days, the Cardinals have established quite a resume already this season, with a pair of road wins over ranked opponents as Wesleyan is just two days removed from a 12-10 win over then-No. 6 Franklin & Marshall.
Kendall Mittleman '23 scored both Cardinal goals in the first quarter as the two sides struggled to find their legs, committing 17 combined turnovers compared to just 11 combined shots in the first 15 minutes of play.
Where the game was won was in the second quarter as the Cardinals outscored the Sagehens 7-1 in the frame, establishing a 9-2 halftime advantage. The first three Wesleyan goals of the quarter all came in open play as
Laura Baine '24 scored off a feed from
Gil Horst '23 before Mittleman completed her hat trick 45 seconds later. Then
Annabel Cincotta '25 made a great move against pressure in the middle to make it 5-1 Cardinals before
Olivia Lai '23 scored on a free position all in a span of 4:41.
Pomona-Pitzer's Caroline Worthington broke up the 5-0 Cardinal scoring run with the first and only Sagehen goal of the quarter, as Wesleyan's three-goal flurry in the final 51 seconds loomed large in the outcome.
Kate Balicki '23 started the 3-0 run with her first goal of the day before Baine scored on a free position and Lai closed the half finishing a feed from
Chessy Greenwald '23.
In need of a response, the Sagehens scored the first three goals of the second half, closing the deficit to 9-5 early in the third quarter, but the Cardinals weathered the storm and made the most of their limited attempts at goal. With just three shots in the third quarter, Wesleyan scored on two of those attempts as Balicki made it 10-5 and
Molly Greer '24 cashed in on a free position look as Wesleyan led 11-5 after three.
Wesleyan continued to make the most of their chance sin the fourth as the Cardinals scored three goals on four shots with both Lai and Baine completing their hat tricks in the final quarter.
The top attack unit was heavily involved for the Cardinals as Baine recorded a game-high five points (three goals, two assists) while Mittleman finished with four points (three goals, one assist) and Lai netted a game-high four goals. Balicki (two goals, one assist) added three points.
Erin Trotta '23 was sensational throughout, recording four ground balls and three caused turnovers to lead the Cardinal defense.
Haley McLaughlin '24 added three ground balls and one caused turnover.
Bridget Horst '26 played an active role in the midfield, totaling a game-high five draw controls to go along with two caused turnovers.
Molly Simon '26 added three draw controls.
