ORLANDO, Fla. – In a matchup of two perennial powers, the No. 4 nationally ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team dispatched Kenyon, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon from the USTA National Campus. Wesleyan (7-0) continues to roll in the dual match season while the Owls fall to 6-3 overall, with all three of their losses coming to ranked opponents.
These two sides met 22 months ago in the NCAA Final Four, with Wesleyan coming out on top 5-1 in a victory that sent the Cardinals to the NCAA Championship in 2021. Wesleyan is now 4-0 all-time against Kenyon.
Wesleyan opened with a sweep of the doubles matches as
Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and
Sarah Youngberg '26 moved to 6-0 as a pairing after defeating Lalasa Nagireddy and Natalie Connelly 8-3 at #3.
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and
Nika Vesely '25 took care of business with an 8-5 win at #2 while
Sasha Gaeth '23 and
Kristina Yu '22 fought back for an 8-7 win at #1 over Eleni Lazaridou and Eleni Dakos.
In the singles play, the outcome of the match was decided early on as Ferrante, Mohsen-Breen, and
Serim Jin '23 all won in under an hour to lock in the points needed to secure the match. Ferrante defeated Allaire Berl 6-3, 6-1 at #2 while Jin took down Catriona MacIntosh 6-1, 6-2 at #5 and Mohsen-Breen finished just seconds later with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Shadia Amado Aguad at #4.
The remaining three singles matches all were extended battles, with Yu ultimately taking control after losing the first set 7-5, she rebounded with a 6-0 second set win before winning the third set tiebreak 10-7 at #3.
Leila Epstein '26 followed a tiebreak win in set one with a 6-2 second set win over Lazaridou.
Katie Fleischman '23 returned to the lineup for the first time this spring and the senior nearly pulled off a comeback as she fell 4-6, 6-3, 7-10 at Nagireddy at #6.
Wesleyan finishes up the Spring Break trip on Thursday with an 11:30 AM start against Denison from the Lake Cane Tennis Center.
