JAN PHYL VILLAGE, FL. – The Wesleyan softball team went 2-0 on the day behind stellar pitching performances from
Isabella Secaira-Cotto '25 and
Brooklin Williams '23. In game one, the Cardinals were able to push one run across on a fielder's choice in the 2
nd inning against Framingham State which ended up being the deciding run. Williams shut down the Rams the rest of the way holding them to just three hits on way to a complete game shutout. Secaira-Cotto matched her teammate in game two against the Clarkson Golden Knights, going the distance while allowing only three hits on way to a 2-0 Wesleyan victory. The Cardinals finish the day 2-0, improving their overall record on the year to 4-2 heading into day four of their spring break trip.
HIGHLIGHTS (1-0 Win vs. Framingham State)
- It was a pitcher's duel from the beginning in this one, with both teams going without a hit in the first inning. The Cards and Rams each had a player reach on a walk, but left them stranded and the game went into the 2nd inning tied at zero
- In the 2nd, the Cardinals managed the only run of the entire game. Williams began the inning by getting on with a walk, which was followed by a popout. Isabella-Secaira-Cotto '25 then delivered the first hit of the ballgame, ripping a single to centerfield that moved Williams to second with one down. After a hit by pitch, the bases were loaded for Lizzie Marino '25 who made contact towards the second baseman who had trouble with it ultimately leading to Williams scoring from third to give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead
- Williams continued her dominance in the circle, putting the Rams down in order over the next two innings. In the 5th Framingham State led off with a double, their first hit of the contest, but were quickly shut down after that.
- Wesleyan was not able to get anything going on offense either, but Williams and the strong defensive effort behind her was able to hold the Rams without a single run. The Rams had one last chance in the 7th inning, but were once again put down in order to end one of the more dominant pitching performances in recent Cardinals' history
NOTES:
- Williams (7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 9 K's) finishes a complete game shutout, striking out a career-high nine Rams
- The teams only finished with three hits apiece, the three hits for Wesleyan are the fewest this season. The three hits given up is tied for the lowest allowed by Cardinals pitching
- Wesleyan left six players on base compared to the Rams only leaving four. Framingham State only had one player reach second base
HIGHLIGHTS (2-0 Win vs. Clarkson)
- After a low scoring pitching duel in game one, it appeared to be going in the opposite direction in game two against Clarkson. Hannah Docktor '24 opened with a leadoff single, but she was thrown out trying to steal second base. Three batters later, Molly Lennon '26 found herself at the plate with a runner on second and two down. She delivered with a RBI-single to drive home Williams and the Cards were on the board. Next up was Krissy Gately '24 who send a ball over the center fielders head for a RBI-double and Wesleyan had a 2-0 1st inning lead
- The game flipped from there on as there was only one hit combined for the next four innings of play. Secaira-Cotto allowed just one hit in the 2nd inning over that time, holding the Golden Knight without another hit until the 6th inning of play. Devin Fitzpatrick was impressive on the other side for Clarkson, shutting the Cardinals out after a 2-run first inning
- The pitchers continued to duel into the 6th, with the Cardinals managing two runners on thanks to a pair of errors, but couldn't push run number three across. Clarkson was able to muster a single hit in both the 6th and 7th innings, but Secaira-Cotto shut the door on a complete game shutout for the Cardinals 2nd win of the day
NOTES:
- Secaira-Cotto (7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 4 K's) secured the second complete game shutout of the day for the Cardinals, holding the Golden Knights to just three total hits
- Wesleyan's top five hitters went 4-for-12, the bottom four and pinch hitters combined for 0-for-11
