WALTHAM, Mass. – For the first time in program history, the Wesleyan women's tennis team recorded a 9-0 win over a Top 20 ranked opponent on the road. History was made on Wednesday afternoon in a clean sweep for the No. 4 ranked Cardinals over No. 19 Brandeis, as Wesleyan improves to 9-0 on the season, having won 39 consecutive regular season dual matches.
The Cardinals earned convincing wins at #2 and #3 doubles, earning a quick 2-0 lead, then taking all three points after
Sasha Gaeth '23 and
Kristina Yu '22 triumphed in an 8-7 (7-1) tiebreak over Ella Chase and Rebecca Suarez at #1. Wesleyan dominated the other two matches as
Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and
Sarah Youngberg '26 combined for a 8-1 win at #3 over Cecilia Denis and Ella Subramanian.
Leila Epstein '26 and
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 dropped just two games in a 8-2 victory at #2 over Phoebe Tamaoki and Nancy Zhang. Those three doubles pairings are a combined 21-0 this season.
The singles portion was just as dominant a showing as the Cardinals recorded five straight set wins, four of which saw Brandeis win five or fewer games in defeat. Epstein was locked in a battle with Suarez at #1, dropping the first set 6-3 before climbing back with a 6-2 second set win and ultimately taking the tiebreak in a close 10-8 decision that sealed the 9-0 win for Wesleyan.
Youngberg was first to finish in singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Chase at #3. Youngberg improves to 12-1 in singles matches in 2022-23 (7-0 in duals).
Katie Fleischman '23 continues to round into form recovering from an extended injury as she defeated Jiayi Zhang easily at #6 (6-2, 6-1).
Serim Jin '23 easily got past Denis 6-2, 6-3 at #5 while Mohsen-Breen improved to 8-0 in dual matches with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Anastasia Sia at #4. Ferrante was challenged at #2 in the opening set before pulling out a 7-5 win and rolling to a 6-0 victory in the second set.
A huge showdown looms on Sunday as the Cardinals travel to Middlebury for a Top 10 showdown against the Panthers that'll begin at 10 AM.
