TUCSON, AZ. – The Wesleyan baseball team concluded their spring break trip to Arizona with a loss to the Oberlin Yeomen, 10-8. The Cardinals and Yeomen continued their trend of playing in high-scoring games against each other, as the two have now combined for 72 runs through their three contests. The scoring got going early in this matchup, with the Yeomen scoring four runs in the top of the 1
st. Wesleyan came right back with three in the bottom half and set the tone for how the rest of the game would go. Oberlin pushed their lead to five at 8-3 in the 4
th, but once again the Cardinals trimmed it down to a single run by the bottom of the 5
th at 8-7. The Yeomen would hold on from there, adding two more over the 6
th and 7
th innings to secure their 10-8 victory. The Yeomen improve to 5-5 with the victory, while the Cardinals finish their spring break trip 5-7.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- It was an electric first inning of play between the Yeomen and the Cardinals. Oberlin opened with four runs in the top of the 1st on four hits and a Wesleyan error. The Cardinals came right back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning and the deficit was down to just one. The big hits of the inning for the Cards came from Kyle Sylvester '22 and Tyler Cosgrove '25 who hit back-to-back RBI-triples to help cut the deficit down to one at 4-3
- Wesleyan threatened again in the bottom of the 3rd, loading the bases with just one down, but the Cards came up empty and the game moved to the top of the 4th still 4-3 in favor of Oberlin. Yeomen used that momentum to produce a big half inning at the plate, driving in four more runs on three hits and another Cardinals' error to push their lead out to 8-3. The big hit of the inning for the Yeomen came from Jacob Thompson who ripped a base clearing 3-run double to cap off the big inning
- The Cardinals once again slowly fought their way back into the game starting in the bottom of the 4th. Cosgrove delivered his 2nd big hit of the game, driving in Sylvester and Matt Halas '24 with a 2-run double to center field. Then in the 5th it was Evan Diaz '25 and Cole Torino '24 who came up with consecutive important base-knocks. Diaz drove in one on the Cards 3rd triple of the afternoon, followed by a Torino RBI-single and the Cardinals were back within one at 8-7 going into the 6th inning of play
- The Oberlin bats would continue to stay hot, driving in two more runs to take a 10-7 lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. It looked like the Cardinals were mounting a comeback in the 7th with a leadoff double by Ricky Finkel '23, but the next two batters were quickly retired. With two down, Torino delivered yet another RBI-hit and the Oberline lead was down to two at 10-8. Both relief pitchers did their jobs over the next two innings and the score remained 10-8, with Oberlin securing their 5th victory of the season
NOTES:
- Alex Deutsch '25 (5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 3 K's) came in relief of Patrick Murphy '24 (4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 K's) and was able to give Wesleyan a chance over the final few innings
- The Cardinals had seven extra-base hits in this one, with Sylvester (3-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI) recording two doubles and a triple
- Cosgrove (2-for-5, 1 R, 3 RBIs) and Torino (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) were the other run producers for the Cardinals today
- Oberlin outhit the Cardinals 15-11 in this one, with the Cardinals leaving 10 men on base to the Yeomen's nine
