NEW LONDON, CT. – The No.3 Wesleyan women's tennis team continues their early-season dominance with yet another convincing win, this time a 9-0 victory over NESCAC foe Connecticut College. The Cardinals were able to win all nine matches to secure their 3
rd straight win to open the 2023 season, advancing to 3-0 (3-0 NESCAC). Connecticut College drops their first game of the season, falling to 1-1 (0-1 NESCAC).
Wesleyan completes the "double sweep" of Connecticut College on Sunday with the men winning their match 9-0 as well earlier in the day. The women's team showed even greater dominance, only allowing Conn College to win a handful of games throughout the entire nine matches. The Cardinals only allowed the Camels to win seven total games in nine matches to be exact.
In doubles, the Cards got off to a quick start with three straight victories in dominant fashion. It began with the underclassman duo of
Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and
Sarah Youngberg '26 teaming up to take down Teagan O'Hara and Anna Slopak of the Camels 8-0 to get the Cardinals on the board. The next doubles match to finish was
Nika Vesely '25 and
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 who made quick work of their competition, 8-1. The last doubles match to finish was
Kristina Yu '22 and
Leila Epstein '26, who defeated Connecticut College's Caitlin Cass and Sana Bhat (8-1) to give Wesleyan a 3-0 advanatge heading into singles play.
In singles play it was more of the same for Wesleyan, taking all six matches to complete the 9-0 sweep of the Camels. There were three Cardinals who were able to hold their opponent without a single game won. The first to do so was
Serim Jin '23 who made quick work of her counterpart with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Next clean sweep for Wesleyan came from
Sasha Gaeth '23, who was able to take down Caroline Champa 6-0, 6-0. The final sweep came from Ferrante, who followed her impressive doubles victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bhat. Two more Cardinals held their opponent to winning just one singular game in two sets. The first of those came from Mohsen-Breen who won 6-1, 6-0. She was followed by a 6-0, 6-1 victory of her own by Vesely who was able to defeat Cass. The most competitive match of the evening finished last, with Yu taking down Courtney Banks in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to secure the Cardinals 9-0 victory over the Camels
Wesleyan will return to the court Saturday March 11
th, for their home opener against another NESCAC opponent in Trinity. The match will begin at 10 am at John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts.
