Former Men’s Basketball Standout Tobin Anderson ’95 Leads Fairleigh Dickinson to NCAA Tournament

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Wesleyan graduate Tobin Anderson '95 has made national headlines this week after leading the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights to the NCAA Tournament in his first year at the helm. The former Wesleyan student-athlete was a standout basketball player, eclipsing 1,000 points in his career and currently sits tied for 11th on Wesleyan's all-time scoring list with 1,129 points. Anderson then graduated from Wesleyan University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and began pursuing his masters at Florida St.

Following the competition of his master's degree in Sports Management, Anderson started pursuing a career in coaching. He began his journey as an assistant coach at Clarkson University (1996-97) and then moved on to Le Moyne College from 1997-99. He got his first head coaching gig and a chance to return to his first stop at Clarkson in 1999-2000, where he led them to their first winning season since 1977-78 going 14-12. He continued his impressive turnaround of the Golden Knights over the next few seasons, posting the best five-season record in program history at 67-66 (.504).

It was then time for Anderson to make a chance, becoming the new head coach of the Hamilton Continentals in 2004. He was impressive once again in his seven years with the Continentals, winning 118 games over that span including two Liberty League regular season titles (2005-06, 2006-07), one Liberty League conference tournament title (2006), and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2006 where he led his team to the Round of 32.

After a short stint at Division I Siena from 2011-13, Anderson returned to the Division II level where he found incredible success at St. Thomas Aquinas in New York. He was dominate from the jump, leading the Spartans to the ECC tournament championship game in his first year at the helm. Anderson would make the ECC Championship in seven of his final eight years at St. Thomas Aquinas, finishing his nine-year stint with a record of 209-62 (.771). He coached the Spartans to seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances over his final seven seasons, becoming a perennial top 25 team in Division II.

After incredible success at St. Thomas Aquinas, Division I teams once again came calling. Anderson eventually took the job at Fairleigh Dickinson in May of 2022 becoming the 8th head coach in FDU history. In his first year Anderson exceeded expectations, leading the Knights to a 19-15 (10-6 NEC) record and the #2 seed in the NEC Conference Tournament. Under the watchful eye of the first-year coach, his two explosive guards in Demetre Roberts and Grant Singleton led FDU to the NEC Tournament Championship game after defeating both Saint Francis Brooklyn and Saint Francis PA. Roberts and Singleton followed him from St. Thomas Aquinas for their 5th and final year of eligibility in hopes of moments like this. Due to the NCAA's transition rule, their opponent in the conference championship game (Merrimack) was unable to make the NCAA Tournament. This resulted in the Knights clinching their 7th ever NCAA Tournament berth following their 70-50 semifinals victory over Saint Francis PA.
