MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan women's tennis team bounced back in a big way Saturday following their first regular season loss in 40 matches last Sunday, defeating NESCAC opponent and nationally ranked Bowdoin College by a score of 9-0. The match was played indoors at Bacon Field House due to the rain, but it didn't slow down the Cards, who completed their 7
th 9-0 sweep of the season by defeating the Polar Bears to get back to their winning ways. With the loss, No. 17 Bowdoin drops to 1-6 (1-2 NESCAC) while Wesleyan improves to 10-1 (5-1 NESCAC) with the victory. In 21 all-time meetings against Bowdoin, this is the first 9-0 sweep for the Cardinals.
Wesleyan opened with two dominating wins in doubles play to take a 2-0 lead going into the final doubles match of the day that turned out to be the most competitive match of the entire morning.
Nika Vesely '25 and
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 were pushed to the brink at #2 by the Polar Bears' Kennedi Carter and Hannah Buckhout but eventually came away with the 8-7 (7-1) tiebreak victory to close out a sweep of doubles play. Wesleyan would then use that momentum in singles, winning in straight sets in each of their six matches to secure the 9-0 victory over the nationally ranked Bowdoin Polar Bears.
In doubles it started with the first-year duo of
Renna Mohsen-Breen '26 and
Sarah Youngberg '26 who came through with a dominating 8-1 win at #3, taking down Elizabeth Yu and Candice Ballarin to get the Cards on the board. Next came another dominating victory by
Kristina Yu '22 and
Sasha Gaeth '23 at #1 who took down Jamilah Karah and Cara Hung 8-3. Ferrante and Vesely closed out the 3-0 sweep in doubles play with a back-and-forth victory.
In singles it was more of the same for the Cardinals who continue to impress in NESCAC play. It opened with a convincing victory from
Leila Epstein '26 at #4 taking down Yu 6-0, 6-3. That was quickly followed with another Wesleyan win at #4 by Youngberg 6-2, 6-2 over Julia DeLuca. The Cardinals managed a third victory at #6 with
Serim Jin '23 topping Bowdoin's Hung 6-1, 6-1. Mohsen-Breen obtained her 2
nd victory of the day, claiming a singles win against Buckhout 6-2, 7-5 at #5. The final two wins of the day for the Cardinals came at #1 and #3 as Vesely (7-5, 6-1) and Ferrante (6-2, 7-5) defeated their counterparts to complete the 9-0 day for the 4
th ranked Cardinals.
Wesleyan will return right back to the court Sunday, April 2
nd, where they will compete against another NESCAC nationally ranked opponent in No. 26 Colby. The game will serve as Wesleyan's senior day, which will take place at John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts starting at 2 pm.
