MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan baseball team competed in a non-conference game on Dresser Diamond Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Mariners of Mitchell by a score of 13-3. The Mariners got off to a quick start, scoring the first six runs of the game, before Wesleyan managed to get one across in the bottom of the 5
th. The Cardinals finished with 12 hits on the night, two more than the Mariners, however walks and hit by pitches allowed Mitchell to push their 13 runs across. Mitchell continues their impressive start to the season, improving to 21-4. Wesleyan drops their 2
nd straight game, moving to 9-11 on the year.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Mariners got the bats going in the opening half-inning of this one, putting together two hits that pushed across two runs. Lelo Martinez drove them both in on a 2-run single through the left side and Mitchell had a 2-0 lead through one. The Cards threatened in the bottom half with two runners on, but couldn't push one across. Mitchell came back in the top of the 2nd and delivered another run, this time on a sacrifice fly and the Mariners were up 3-0
- The two pitchers put together a scoreless 3rd, but the bats for both teams got hot again in the middle innings. Mitchell scored once in the 4th, then two more times in the 5th to take their largest advantage at 6-0. Wesleyan fought back with one in the bottom half, with Christian Boudreau '25 coming through with a double down the right field line to get the Cards on the board, 6-1. Martinez delivered another big hit in the 6th, this time a two-run double to left center and Mitchell had the lead back up to 8-1. Wesleyan salvaged another run in the bottom half on an Evan Diaz '25 RBI-single to trim it to 8-2 going into the 7th
- A double play cut the momentum of a two-hit 7th inning for the Cardinals and the game moved into the 8th still 8-2. Mitchell continued to put together long at-bats, eventually leading to two more runs coming across in the 8th via walks with the bases loaded, 10-2 Mariners. Wesleyan showed promise again in their half of the 8th with runners on, but could only get one across on a Cole Torino '24 rip to right field. Mitchell added three more insurance runs in the top half of the 9th, as Wesleyan went down in order in the final frame to reach the final score of 13-3
NOTES:
- The Cardinals used nine pitchers in this one, each pitching one inning. Eddie Zanor '23 (1 IP, 1 BB, 3 K's) struck out the side in the 3rd
- James Marsden '26 (3-for-4, 2 R) put together a career-high three hits
- Ernie Little '26 (2-for-4) and Diaz (2-for-4, RBI) joined him with multi-hit games. For Little, it is his 8th two-hit game of the season
- Wesleyan outhit the Mariners 12-10 with both teams leaving double-digit baserunners on base
