MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The No. 4 ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team saw their underclassmen show out and lead the way to a 6-3 win over No. 7 Amherst that clinched a fourth straight Little 3 Championship for the Cardinals. Wesleyan (13-1, 8-1 NESCAC) vaults into first place in the league standings, knocking off previously unbeaten Amherst (10-2, 7-1 NESCAC).
The quest for a fourth straight title began 90 minutes after the scheduled start time of 2:00 PM as the match was moved inside after rainfall in the early afternoon. With play underway at 3:30 PM, Wesleyan took the early advantage with a 2-1 lead after doubles.
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and
Nika Vesely '25 took down Amy Cui and Katelyn Hart 8-5 at #2 while
Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and
Sarah Youngberg '26 toppled Sophie Diop and Deliala Friedman 8-5 at #3.
Wesleyan saw their lead disappear early on in singles play, with Amherst earning convincing wins at #3 and #4 to take a 3-2 lead in the team scoring. The Cardinals, however, bounced back in a big way with four unanswered victories, all of which coming from underclassmen.
Leila Epstein '26 was first to finish, overcoming a 6-4 first set defeat to go on and win both the second and third sets by 6-2 margins. The first-year is now 10-1 in singles play this season.
Vesely was next to finish, as she earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win over Cui at #1 as the Cardinals retook the lead at 4-3. The sophomore earned her second win of the day and improved to 11-0 in dual matches this season.
Needing just one more win to seal the match, Mohsen-Breen made quick work of Maddie Swire at #6, earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory for the clinching point of the match. Mohsen-Breen is undefeated, with a team-leading 12 dual match wins in 2023.
With the match now decided, Youngberg finished off Karolina Dobiecka 6-3, 6-4 at #5 to give the Cardinals the 6-3 win. Youngberg's win is her 15
th combined singles victory this season (duals and tournament), tied with Mohsen-Breen for the most on the team.
Wesleyan's triumph earns the Cardinals the Little 3 Championship for the fourth year running. Prior to 2019, Wesleyan had never won the Little 3 in their first 41 attempts.
The Cardinals close out the regular season next weekend with a Saturday trip to face Tufts.
