HOBOKEN, NJ. – The Wesleyan baseball team traveled to New Jersey Tuesday night to compete in a non-conference game against Stevens. The Cardinals were defeated by the Ducks 11-1, suffering their 4
th loss in five contests. The game opened as a pitching duel, with the two sides holding each offense to only one run apiece through four innings before the Ducks exploded for seven 5
th inning runs to blow the game open at 8-1. Stevens (22-10) added three more in the 6
th on way to their 22
nd win on the year. Wesleyan falls to 10-13 with the defeat.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The game started fast with both teams scoring in the opening frame in what seemed as though was going to be a high-scoring contest. Wesleyan opened in the top of the first with a Matt Halas '24 walk followed by a James Marsden '26 single and had two men on and nobody out to start the game. Ernie Little '26 eventually drove Halas in on an RBI-fielder's choice and the Cardinals held an early 1-0 lead. The Ducks came right back with a run in the bottom half, pushing one across on a walk and a single to even the score at one
- Eddie Zanor '23 settled in over the next three innings, holding the Ducks without a run while only giving up a single hit. William Sotiropoulos matched him on the opposing bump, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings on relief after their starter came out in the 2nd
- The Ducks offense found life in the 5th in a big way, plating seven runs on three hits and three walks. Two walks opened the inning and forced the Cardinals to make a pitching change. Stevens then blasted a three-run home run to give them their first advantage of the evening at 4-1. Another two hits followed by a handful of walks and hit by pitches pushed across four more runs for the Ducks and they had their largest lead of the day at 8-1 heading into the 6th
- The Cardinals threatened with two on in the top half, but the threat was neutralized by the Ducks' relievers and they went into the bottom half still up by seven runs. They then added three more insurance runs in the form of three hits and a walk to extend their lead to 11-1 going into the final three innings of play. The Cards could only muster one runner on the rest of the way by virtue of a Ducks' fielding error and would fall 11-1
