MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – After clawing back from 8-5 down, the No. 18 ranked Wesleyan men's lacrosse team took some costly penalties down the stretch as Williams walked away with a 10-9 victory and the Little Three Championship on Saturday from Jackson Field. The Cardinals (8-6, 4-5 NESCAC) have lost four of five while the Ephs (9-5, 6-3 NESCAC) are winners of three straight.
In a hotly contested matchup between storied rivals, Williams made the key plays down the stretch to hold off a Wesleyan comeback attempt. After
Jack Raba '23 scored to tie the score at 8-8 with 9:24 remaining, Williams' Cade Schuckman took a big hit from
Nick Rodi '22 and was still able to find the back of the net to put the Ephs back ahead.
On the ensuing man-up opportunity, Williams found another as Ryan Johnson scored to restore a two-goal Ephs advantage. Raba fed
CK Giancola '24 as the Cardinals made it a one-goal game with 5:02 remaining. However, an empty offensive possession was followed by another Cardinal cross-checking penalty with 2:47 left.
Williams drained well over a minute off the clock before
Drew Skibniewski '23 made a save on a Calvin Caputo shot attempt on-goal. After crossing midfield, Wesleyan called timeout and set a play up for
Will Miller '26 who had his shot attempt blocked with 36 seconds left. The Ephs' Eddie Loyd picked up the ground ball and Williams was able to drain the remaining seconds off the clock before celebrating their first outright Little Three title since 2009.
Raba had a game-high five points (two goals, three assists) while
Justin Hazard '23 scored twice.
Kevin Talbot '24 dominated in face-offs, winning 10-of-13 with nine ground balls. Skibniewski made 11 saves in net to go along with three ground balls.
Finlay MacKnight tallied two goals and two assists for the Ephs while Harrison Cross (one goal, two assists) and Jesse Shapiro (two goals, one assist) each had three points.
Wesleyan looks to get back in the win column in the regular season finale on Wednesday with a showdown against Connecticut College at 7 PM in New London.
