MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan baseball team competed in a non-conference game against the Western Connecticut State Wolves Wednesday afternoon at Dresser Diamond, coming away with a 14-5 victory. The Cardinals put together 14 runs on 15 hits on way to the nine-run victory, claiming their 2
nd win in their last three contests. After giving up a run in the opening frame, the Cardinals responded with seven unanswered over the next two innings to take a commanding 7-1 advantage. The Wolves fought back to make it 8-5, but the Cards used a six-run 7
th inning to put them away and come away with the win. WCSU falls to 9-26, while the Cardinals improve to 13-15.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The offenses got going early in this one, with the Wolves getting on the board first. They managed to get one across on a hit by pitch, walk, then their lone hit of the inning to go up 1-0. Wesleyan would respond in the bottom half, plating four on five hits. Ernie Little '26 led off with a triple, but the next two Cardinals would strikeout bringing up Tyler Cosgrove '25. The sophomore catcher delivered an RBI-double, followed by a Dylan Judd '22 home run and Wesleyan went up 3-1. They weren't done just yet, with Eddie Zanor '22 joining the hit parade with an RBI-double for his 1st hit of the season to go up 4-1
- Wesleyan's bats stayed hot in the 2nd inning, reeling off three more runs on four hits to take a commanding 7-1 advantage. Ricky Finkel '23 had the big hit of the inning, driving in two on a single to center field. The Cardinals threatened for more, loading the bases, but the Wolves were able to get out of trouble. WCSU fought back with four runs of their own in the middle innings, but still trailed 8-5 heading into the 6th
- The Cardinals managed to load the bases again in the bottom of the 6th, but could not get one across and the game remained 8-5 moving to the 7th. Wesleyan would not spoil another quality scoring chance with runners on this time, exploding for six runs to put the game out of reach going into the final two innings of play. Kyle Sylvester '22 and Jack Carpenter '25 hit back-to-back RBI-doubles to push the lead out to 11-5 before Jimmy Clifford '22 singled through the right side and brought two more home and Wesleyan held a comfortable 14-5 lead which they would hold the rest of the way
NOTES:
- The bullpen was fantastic for the Cards, combining to just give up one earned run over the final six innings of play. Joey Light-Rake '25 (2 IP, H, 0 ER, K) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Mario Lee '25 came in for the final frame and put the Wolves down in order to complete the victory
- Six different Cards finish with multiple hits, with Clifford (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Finkel (2-for-5, R, 2 RBIS) tying their season-high with two apiece
- Little (2-for-6, 3 R, 3B) records his first-career triple, while Judd (1-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR) hits his team-leading 4th home run of the season
- The Cardinals put together 15 hits to the Wolves 11
