WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The three-time defending NESCAC Champion Wesleyan women's tennis team began their title defense on Friday morning, defeating seven-seed Hamilton 5-1 in the NESCAC Quarterfinal round in a match played at Williams College. Wesleyan (15-1) is back in the semifinals for the fourth straight season and fifth time overall in team history.
Wesleyan opened play with a dominating 8-0 win from
Katie Fleischman '23 and
Sasha Gaeth '23 at #3 doubles but Hamilton managed a win at #2 to tie the team scoring. Looking for an advantage heading into singles play,
Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and
Sarah Youngberg '26 came through with an 8-5 win at #1 over Lauren Holtzman and Hannah Apsey. As a tandem this season, Mohsen-Breen and Youngberg are now 14-1.
Leading 2-1 after doubles, Wesleyan took care of the match with relative ease as the Cardinals won the opening set on five of the six courts. Youngberg was first to finish with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #3 over Stephanie Pratt. Mohsen-Breen followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #4 over Shannon Cicero and the clinching point came at #6 from Fleischman who won 6-2, 6-1 over Kate Solowey.
Serim Jin '23 was leading 6-0, 5-3 in her match at #5 while
Leila Epstein '26 was up 6-4, 2-1 at #1 and
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 led 5-1 in the second set after dropping the first set at #2.
A semifinal showdown with #3 Amherst looms in what is a rematch of the 2022 semifinal wherein the Cardinals edged the Mammoths in an instant classic, overcoming a 4-3 deficit to score a 5-4 come-from-behind win.
