MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan softball team concluded non-conference play with a sweep of Westfield State Tuesday night at The Softball Field. This is their second sweep of a non-conference opponent this season, with the first coming against Mitchell back in early April. The Cards were in a tight battle through 2 ½ innings in game one with the contest deadlocked at one apiece, before a huge eight-run bottom of the 3
rd broke the game open. Wesleyan's pitching and defense held tough the rest of the way to complete the 9-1 win in five innings of action. In game two pitching dominated, with both starters holding their opponents without a run through four innings of action before Wesleyan pushed two across in the bottom of the 5
th. The Cardinals gave up the lead in the top of the 7
th, but ended the game in dramatic fashion on a walk-off RBI-single by
Molly Lennon '26 to secure the sweep, 3-2
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (9-1 WIN):
- Wesleyan jumped out to an early advantage, plating one after a scoreless top of the first from Brooklin Williams '23 in the circle. Lennon singled home the run on a rip to third base and the Cards held a 1-0 lead after one. After stranding multiple runners on in the 1st and 2nd innings, the Owls were able to find a run in the top of the 3rd on a pair of hits to even the game at one
- The Cards then exploded for an eight-run bottom half of the 3rd to blow the game open at 9-1. They went for five hits, also capitalizing on a pair of Westfield State fielding errors. Alexis Campbell '22 got it started with a RBI-double to score Hannah Docktor '24. Lennon then singled home another and Wesleyan had a 3-1 lead. The hit parade continued with Williams and Sydney Walls '26 both delivering RBI-knocks and the lead ballooned to 5-1. The Owls then made two costly errors that added four more for the Cards
- Williams continued to put up zeros in the circle the rest of the way, leading to the game ending in five innings by a score of 9-1. The lefty senior had to work out of trouble throughout the contest, with multiple runners stranded in nearly every inning of work, but she only gave up one run in five strong innings to give Wesleyan the non-conference victory
NOTES:
- Williams (5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 BB, 2 K's) picked up her 5th win of the season. She managed to only allow one run despite runners left on in each of her five innings of work
- Six different Cardinals got a hit. Lennon (2-for-3, R, 2 RBIs) was the only Card with multiple hits, with both of them being RBI singles
- Walls (1-for-2, R, 2B, 2 RBIs) had a career-high two RBIs. Campbell (1-for-2, R, 2 RBIs) joined Lennon and Walls with a multi-RBI game
- Wesleyan outhit Westfield State 7-4, Owls left 10 runners on base
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (3-2 WIN):
- Westfield opened with a double in the top of the 1st, but couldn't get the run across to start game number two. Despite a pitcher's duel between Gianna Conte and Revi Brown '23 that saw a 0-0 game through four innings of play, both teams managed to get runners on in nearly every half inning through that span
- Brown completed her second 1-2-3 inning of the game in the 5th, bringing the Cards back up to the plate. Following two groundouts to open the inning, Wesleyan put together a trio of hits to get on the board first. Campbell opened it up with a single, quickly followed by an RBI-double from Lennon and Wesleyan went up 1-0. Cat Palmer '26 then connected on another base hit, however the relay gunned her down at 2nd base, not before Wesleyan's second run of the game crossed home
- Brown worked their way through another inning in the 6th, but the Cards couldn't add an insurance run in the bottom half. The Owls finally got to Brown in the 7th, putting together three hits, a hit by pitch and walk to even the score at two and keeping the game alive. Wesleyan regrouped in the bottom half, with Docktor and Campbell recording back-to-back singles to put the winning run in scoring position with just one down. Lennon then came through with the biggest hit of the day, sending a single to center field that brought home Docktor who was able to just get under the tag of the Owls' catcher and Wesleyan took game two 3-2
NOTES:
- Brown (6.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 K's) held the Owls without a run for six innings of play
- Campbell (3-for-4, R) finishes with a career-high three hits. Lennon (3-for-4, R, 2 RBIs) joins her with three hits, the first-year's 3rd time reaching this feat
- Wesleyan outhits the Owls 13-6. The Cardinals 13 hits are the second most they have recorded this season
