Softball Defeated Twice by Williams on Senior Day

Cardinals fall 10-2 (5 in.) in game one, 10-3 in game two

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan softball team was defeated twice by NESCAC opponent Williams Saturday afternoon on the Cardinals Senior Day. The Cardinals honored their three seniors before the games, then got into the double-header. In game one the Cards fell behind 3-0, but quickly fought back to make it 3-2 through two innings of action. Williams then added seven late runs in the 4th and 5th innings to force the early end to game one, 10-2. In game two it was Wesleyan that got on the board first, but the Ephs responded with four unanswered followed by a five-run 5th inning to put the Cards away, 10-3. Williams advances to 18-14 heading into the final day of the regular season. Wesleyan drops to 13-23 with the losses going into their final series of the regular season.
 
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (10-2 LOSS)
  • Williams had their bats going early, scoring three runs in the opening half-inning of the contest. They put together three hits, including two RBI-singles, to jump out to their 3-0 lead. After they were unable to score in the bottom half, Wesleyan got their scoring going in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Brooklin Williams '23 got it started with a double to open the inning followed by a walk and Krissy Gately '24 single to load the bases with nobody out. Ciara Castillo '23 and Molly Lennon '26 then pushed the two runs across on a single and walk to make it 3-2
  • After a 1-2-3 inning from both sides in the 3rd inning, the Ephs' bats got going again in the 4th. Williams only needed one hit, aided by a pair of Wesleyan fielding errors and trio of fielder's choices they were able to plate three and extend their lead to 6-2
  • Williams kept up the pressure, adding four more runs in the top half of the 7th to force the Cardinals to have to score in the bottom half to keep the game going. Wesleyan went down in order and fell 10-2 in five innings of play
 
NOTES:
  • Castillo (1-for-2, RBI) and Williams (1-for-2, R) were both able to get hits on their Senior Day
  • The Cards were outhit 10-3
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (10-3 LOSS)
  • After three consecutive 1-2-3 half innings to open game two, it was Wesleyan that got on the board first capitalizing off a Ephs fielding error. Williams opened the inning with a walk, working her way around the bases thanks to an error on a Gately ground ball toward shortstop. Both pitchers made quick work of their batters in the 3rd inning as well and the game moved into the 4th with the Cardinals up 1-0
  • The Ephs offense found it's footing in the 4th, stringing together three hits including an RBI-single to take their first lead of game number two at 2-1. Gately singled in the bottom half, but the Cardinals couldn't get her across and Williams held a 2-1 lead going into the 5th
  • The Ephs built on their lead in the 5th, connecting on a two-run double over the center fielder's head that extended their lead to 4-1 heading into the bottom half. Wesleyan fought back with a sacrifice fly from Lennon, but Williams still held a 4-2 lead. Williams built on their advantage from there, scoring five in the 6th and another in the 7th to reach the final score of 10-3, completing the sweep
 
NOTES:
  • Gately (2-for-4, R) was the only Cardinal with multiple hits in the game
  • Lennon (0-for-3, RBI) contributed a sacrifice fly, making it four straight games with at least one RBI
  • Cardinals were outhit by the Ephs 12-5

The Cardinals will complete their final regular season action with a double-header against the Colby Mules on the road on Sunday May 7th.
