MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The No. 5 ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team made quick work of Allegheny in a 6-0 win at home in the NCAA Tournament Second Round on Saturday morning. Wesleyan (18-1) advances to the NCAA Third Round (Sweet 16) where they will face No. 33 Mary Washington from the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts on Sunday at Noon. Allegheny (19-5) closes a historic season, having won an NCAA Tournament match for the first time in program history on Friday over Pitt.-Greensburg.
Playing in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in program history (seventh consecutive), the Cardinals have now won at least one match in the national postseason tournament in all eight appearances dating back to 2001. This is the Cardinals' sixth consecutive trip to the Sweet 16.
Racing to a 3-0 lead in doubles play, Wesleyan dropped just two total games in a dominant showing that took just 30 minutes. The Cardinals' #3 team of
Renna Mohsen-Breen and
Sarah Youngberg '26 were first to finish with an 8-1 triumph over Taylor Hayes and Allison Riley. That Cardinal tandem is now 17-1 on the season, winning nine consecutive matches.
Caitlyn Ferrante '23 and
Nika Vesely '25 swept Maria Lounder and Sabrina Rodriguez 8-0 at #2 before
Kristina Yu '22 and
Sasha Gaeth '23 finished up with an 8-1 win at #1 over Ella Swan and Jean-Arlette Legrand.
It was much of the same in singles play, with the Cardinals losing just five games across six matches. First to finish was
Leila Epstein '26 at #1 over Swan, 6-0, 6-0. Then it was Youngberg and
Katie Fleischman '23 recording a double clincher, as the pairing finished points simultaneously to lead to the 6-0 match decision. Youngberg completed a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Lounder at #4 while Fleischman rolled 6-1, 6-0 over Hayes at #6.
Yu was on the verge of closing out Rodriguez as she led 6-0, 5-0 at #3 when play was halted.
Serim Jin '23 was up in her match against Noelle Kidd 6-1, 3-0 at #5 while Ferrante led 6-2, 3-0 at #2 against Legrand.
Next up for the Cardinals is a familiar foe, as Wesleyan will face Mary Washington on Sunday, an opponent Wesleyan defeated 5-2 in the same round (NCAA Third Round – Sweet 16) last season in Lexington, Virginia.
