Field Hockey Dominates Clark, 5-0

Wesleyan improves to 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 2010

WORCESTER, Mass. – Five more goals and another shutout for the Wesleyan field hockey team who defeated Clark, 5-0, on the road on Tuesday night. The win moves the Cardinals to 3-0 on the season, signaling the team's best start to a campaign since 2010. The Cougars fall back to 2-2 with the loss.

The freshman sensation Kenzie Mauro '27 continues to litter the stat sheet, racking up three assists to push her season point total to 10 through three games. She becomes just the second Cardinal since 2011 to dish out three assists in a game. Georgia Adams '26 picked up two goals and one assist, giving her a career-high five points on the night and nine points in the last two games alone.

Adams showed a nose for goal once again, scoring almost seven minutes into play as Mauro lined up a shot from inside the circle that was deflected in by Adams at the opposite post.

Sydney Cameron '26 was in the right place at the right time for the second Cardinal goal as Mauro lofted a rainbow shot at the near side off a penalty corner that hit the crossbar, deflecting towards traffic in front. Cameron managed to get enough on the ball to score on the rebound to make it 2-0 Cardinals early in the second quarter.

Taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, the Cardinals didn't let up in the third, scoring three more to put the game out of reach for the Cougars. The third goal came on a near breakaway as the Clark goalie came well off her line to challenge Ava Galdenzi '24. The ball came to Isabelle Benoit '26 on the near side and with an open net to shoot at, a foul in the arc led to a penalty stroke. Helen Deretchin '25 stepped up and made no mistake, shooting hard and low to her left to make it 3-0 Wesleyan.

Just 1:13 later, it was Kenzie Kelly '25 and her speed that made the difference. Playing up the near side, she beat her defender to the ball and nudged the ball into the arc where she spotted Adams open as the Cougar defenders came rushing to the end line, attempting to win possession back. Kelly put the ball on a platter for Adams who swept home her second goal of the game.

A third Cardinal goal in a span of 2:08 was the final tally of the evening as Sarah Porter '27 got on the board for her first career goal. Hannah Meyers '27 found Mauro open at midfield and with Porter open behind the last Cougar defender, Mauro hit her classmate with a perfect pass. Possessing on her backhand, Porter deeked back to the middle of the field, leaving the lone defender out of position and the freshman made no mistake with the shot attempt.

The Cardinals dominated the shot totals at 16-3 while generating a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners for the game. Audrey Pace '26 (two saves) picked up the win, playing the first 45 minutes in the cage before Athena Vadnal '25 came on for the fourth quarter and wasn't forced into action as the Cardinals recorded a second shutout of the season.

Wesleyan's busy week of non-conference play continues on Thursday night as the Cardinals return to Smith Field for a 6:30 PM start against Roger Williams.
