Durkin Undefeated as Women’s Tennis Runner-up at UConn Invitational

STORRS, Conn. – It was an action-packed weekend for the Wesleyan women's tennis team as they finished as the runner-up at the UConn Invitational, beating out Sacred Heart on Friday and Stony Brook University on Saturday before falling to host UConn on Sunday. Lane Durkin '27 was undefeated in the No. 4 singles position in her first outing as a Cardinal, and the No. 2 doubles position with partner Sarah Youngberg '26.

Day One Highlights:
  • The Cardinals picked up two doubles victories on Friday as Macie Carlos '27 and Alexandra Burnett '27 won the first game of the weekend in the No. 3 doubles spot with a 6-1 win over Selasie Senanu and Olivia Furrows.
  • Youngberg and Durkin earned the second doubles win of the day and the first of their weekend at No. 2 doubles in a 6-2 defeat of Katsiaryna Starastsenka and Melena del Olma.
  • Four singles wins went to the Cardinals as Durkin's first singles victory was a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Olmo at No. 4.
  • Jackie Soloveychik '27 took a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Kim Fenton. Carlos defeated Senanu 6-1, 6-3 at No 5, and Burnett at No. 6 defeated Furrows, 6-4, 6-1.
Day Two Highlights:
  • In a freshman dominated outing against Stony Brook, the Cardinals took all three doubles matches as Durkin and Youngberg won their second match of the weekend, defeating Elena Lobo-Corral and Kristia Boro 6-0 at No. 2. At No. 3, Carlos and Burnett downed Cornelia Bruu-Syversen and Darian Perfiliev, 6-4. And the No. 1 pairing of Soloveychik and Leila Epstein '26 finished off Mia Palladino and Chandrika Joshi, 6-3.
  • The Cardinals split the singles matches 3-3 with the Seawolves. Durkin's second singles match win at No. 4 was 6-4, 6-3 over Bruu-Syversen.
  • No. 2 Youngberg earned her first singles win of the weekend in a 6-3, 6-3 win over Joshi. Carlos won the No. 5 spot 6-1, 6-4 over Boro.
Day Three Highlights:
  • Winning their third and final doubles matchup at No. 2, Durkin and Youngberg defeated Aleksandra Karamyshev and Isabel Petri Bere, 6-3.
  • Rounding out Durkin's singles wins of the weekend was a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of Victoria Matos.
  • Soloveychik defeated Karamyschev in a forced third set after falling in the first 1-6 before coming back 6-3 in the second with a final third set score of 10-3 at No. 2. Burnett also forced a third set at No. 6 after being down 2-6 in the first but dominated through the second and third with 7-6 and 11-9 victories over Caroline Hinshaw.
The Cardinals return home to host the ITA New England Regional Championships at the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts, beginning Friday, Sept 22, through Sunday, Sept. 24.
