MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – For the third straight match, the Wesleyan volleyball team has swept their opponent. In their second NESCAC matchup of the season, the Cardinals downed Trinity 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-16) on Wednesday night from Silloway Gymnasium as they open the season with a perfect 7-0 record and move to 2-0 in the NESCAC.
Throughout the match the Cardinals totaled 44 points on 41 kills, one service ace, and two blocks. As a team, Wesleyan posted 35 assists and 56 digs.
The team was led by
Sophia Lindus '26 with 11 kills.
Kathryn Morton '24 racked up nine kills on 14 attempts, hitting .643 for the match.
Fiona LaCamera '27 totaled four blocks including two solo.
Ali Landa '26 finished with 15 assists and
Bianca Ortiz '24 led with 16 digs.
The first set was a tight matchup as the Bantams got on the board early, but Wesleyan came back to even the score. The Cardinals' largest lead came in a seven-point run that started with a service error by the Bantams before
Bianca Gonya '25 and
Michelle Jorba '25 were able to land two kills. The final kill of the set came by
Bella Ahearn '23 as a Morton ace finished off a set-clinching 3-0 run after Trinity went ahead 23-22.
The Cardinals got the better of the Bantams in the second set, jumping out on a 4-0 run to begin with attack errors and a kill from Lindus. Another four-point run began with a Jorba kill, followed by Morton recording three straight kills. The final three points were two Bantams errors and a kill by LaCamera.
The third set was the most-convincing of the three as Wesleyan hit .314 with 14 kills coming on 35 attempts, their highest individual set attack percentage of the night, compared to Trinity who was held to a .051 attack percentage with 12 kills and 10 errors in 39 attempts. After the Bantams went ahead 4-2 early, Wesleyan responded with a 5-0 run and later enjoyed a couple of 3-0 runs along with a 4-0 run. Wesleyan led 24-11 before Trinity scored five unanswered points, until the match finally ended with a
Kate Long '24 kill.
The Cardinals return to the court on Friday, Sept. 22, when they host Susquehanna at 8:00 PM.
