MEDFORD, Mass. – Another day, another sweep for the No. 15 ranked Wesleyan volleyball team who swept RIT handily on Saturday morning in a neutral site match played at Tufts. Wesleyan won by a set score line of 25-18, 25-12, 25-15 as the Cardinals remain undefeated at 9-0, while recording their fifth straight sweep. The Tigers drop to 3-10.
Wesleyan benefitted from a career game from
Lila Sayre '25 who went for 11 kills with no errors on 17 attempts, hitting .588 for the match, while adding six digs. Sayre easily set a new career-high in both categories as her previous-best was seven kills last season at Bates.
Wesleyan had five players hit at least .545 for the match on double-digit attempts. As a team, the Cardinals hit a season-high .404 with 46 kills and 10 errors on 89 attempts.
Fiona LaCamera '27 went for seven kills (.545 attack percentage), four blocks, three digs, and two service aces.
Bella Ahearn '23 recorded six kills with no errors while
Kate Long '24 (four kills, two blocks),
Katelyn Olin '27 (three kills, three blocks) and
Mariko Tanaka '24 (three kills, two digs) all finished with no attack errors.
Bianca Ortiz '24 set a new season-high, finishing just one shy of her career-high, with four aces. She added 13 digs and four assists to her match totals.
Ali Landa '26 led the Cardinal setters with 20 assists.
It was a very balanced attack in the first set, with five Cardinals recording at least three kills. In a tightly-contested set for the majority of play, the Cardinals gained some separation and controlled play late with a 9-3 run that resulted in a 25-18 first set win.
Sayre took over in the second set, racking up six kills on eight attempts as the Cardinals hit .500 in the frame (14 kills, three errors in 22 attempts). On the defensive side, the Cardinals limited RIT to just .037 on their attacks, paving the way for a convincing 25-12 win.
It was much of the same in the third and final set, with Sayre again racking up five kills on nine attempts while the Cardinals posted five blocks to carry the way to a clinching 25-15 win in a match that took just 1:01 to finish.
Wesleyan is back at home for two matches next weekend, welcoming Colby on Friday night and Bates on Saturday before traveling to NYU for a massive Sunday afternoon match against a team that advanced to the Final Four last season.
