MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – A pair of
Georgia Adams '26 goals in a span of 2:18 in the third quarter proved enough for the Wesleyan field hockey team in a 2-1 win over No. 15 ranked Hamilton on Sunday from Smith Field. Following yesterday's 4-1 win over No. 14 Trinity, the Cardinals (6-1, 3-0 NESCAC) complete a weekend home sweep of two ranked opponents and defeat the Continentals for the first time since 2014.
Â
One of just three remaining unbeaten teams in the NESCAC – joining No. 1 Middlebury and No. 5 Tufts – the Cardinals made history on Sunday, as Wesleyan is 3-0 to start NESCAC play for the first time in program history.
Â
With her two goals on Sunday, Adams is now tied with Sam Maynard of Amherst for top spot in the NESCAC leaderboard as both players have nine goals through seven games. Adams' point total is now at 20 on the season, the most of any player in the NESCAC.
Â
Playing in the rain on a dreary day in Middletown, the two sides didn't get much going in the first half on either end. The Continentals generated six shots, four of which coming off two penalty corners, but the two attempts on-goal were both turned aside by
Audrey Pace '26 who posted six saves for the second straight game.
Â
The action picked up to start the third quarter as Wesleyan hemmed the ball in the Continentals' defensive end, generating four penalty corners in a span of 1:03 before converting on the fourth attempt. The insert went to
Imani Ochieng '25 on the near side and with time for the Cardinals to get into position, Ochieng's sweep went towards the far post where Adams was waiting to knock in the goal.
Â
Another goal soon followed as
Sydney Cameron '26 carried in front of the Cardinal bench before sending a pass to Adams who was left unmarked 30 feet from the arc. Carrying in, Adams worked her way around one defender and eventually took a shot from a great position in front. With
Ava Galdenzi '24 screening the goalkeeper, the shot found the back of the cage and gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
Â
Hamilton threatened with a pair of shots on-goal late in the third quarter, both Pace was there both times, keeping Wesleyan's 2-0 lead intact.
Â
Pace was again involved, making consecutive saves on a Hamilton penalty corner over a minute into the fourth, but a loose ball in front was fought for by both teams for more than five seconds, before Lilly Truchon nudged the ball that found it's way in, making it 2-1 Cardinals with 13:48 to play.
Â
Despite the pressure from Hamilton's goal, Wesleyan controlled the action over the remainder of play as the Continentals failed to generate a shot or penalty corner before the final whistle. The Continentals even pulled their goalkeeper, adding an extra field player into the game, but Wesleyan handled the pressure and put the game away.
Â
Wesleyan will spend the next week preparing for a trip to face No. 1 Middlebury in Vermont on Saturday, September 30 at 12:00 PM.
