MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Notching the game-winner on a penalty kick in the second half,
Lucas Ruehlemann '25 recorded his first goal of the season for the Wesleyan men's soccer team as they shut out New York University, 1-0, in their season and home opener from Citrin Field.
A physical game through 90 minutes, both the Cardinals' and Violets' defenses stood tall through the first half as both teams were held scoreless. The Cardinals outshot the Violets 9-5 in the first.
The Cardinals were awarded a a yellow card penalty kick at 70:33 of the second half, setting Ruehlemann up for the tally. Ruehlemann's right foot shot, on a skip step at the line, found its target for the game's only goal.

Mathis Blanc '26 made four saves, recording his first career shutout. Luca Mancuso made five saves for the Violets.
The Cardinals return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they head to Colby College for a 2 p.m. NESCAC matchup.
