MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Lead by senior forward
Jenna Stevens '24 with a goal and two assists, the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team pulled out a 3-1 comeback victory over Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon from Spurrier-Snyder Arena in the second of a two-game weekend series. Stevens posted a team-high eight shots on goal and was a plus-two along with teammate
Mairead Kennedy '24.
As the Polar Bears (6-6-2 overall, 3-3-2 NESCAC) outshot the Cardinals 12-10 in the first period and posted an opening goal from Brett Stoddard, the game initially looked to be going in their favor just as the game had the night before. The Bears took the first of two games this weekend with the Cardinals (6-5-2 overall, 2-3-1 NESCAC), pulling a 4-3 overtime victory on Friday night. The Cardinals, however, weren't going away softly and tied the game up at one in the second period.
Isabelle Allieri '25 scored the first goal of the afternoon for the Cardinals with less than five minutes remaining in the second period at 3:41. Tracking the Bears turnover at the Cardinals' own blue line, the Cardinals sent the puck back down into the Bears' defensive zone. The Bears tried to dump the puck around the back of the goal, but Stevens shut down the play on the far boards. Stevens made a short pass to Allieri out right of the goal, allowing Allieri to deflect the puck high over Sarah Peterson's shoulder.
Securing the man advantage as the Bears were called for a hooking infraction,
Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23 corralled the puck down at the Cardinals own goal line and gained the zone before beginning a pinball passing attempt with Stevens and
Christina Tournas '25 to set up the power play unit. Stevens made the initial shot out high at the point, the puck deflecting again off Tournas' stick and behind Peterson. The Bears pulled Peterson in the final minute and with less than 30 seconds in regulation, Stevens put away the final goal on an empty net attempt.
Jenna Rekoske '24 finished with 10 faceoff victories, leading all Cardinals off the draw.
In goal,
Rei Halloran '23 finished with 20 saves. Peterson made 39 saves in net for the Bears.
The Cardinals return to action on Tueday, Jan. 16, when they host Plymouth State at 3 p.m.
