MIDDLETOWN, CT. – With an offense powered by graduate forward
Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23, the Wesleyan women's hockey team put on a dominant 3-0 performance over Plymouth State University in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon from Spurrier-Snyder Arena. Starting goaltender
Jenna Guglielmi '27 earned her second victory in just her second start this season while
Carly Ward '27 scored her first-career goal as a Cardinal.
The Cardinals (7-5-2 overall) hit the ice with momentum the moment the puck dropped for the first period. Just under 10 minutes of action, Ward scored her first goal as a Cardinal to open the scoring at 11:38. Goeler-Slough caught the puck just inside the Panthers' (3-13-0 overall) zone as the Cardinals tried to regain attacking possession and sent the puck out to
Amelia Molin '27 in the far corner. Molin skirted the puck up the wall to Ward who took the one-timer shot on Teagan Wilson.
As the Panthers were called for a tripping minor with less than two minutes of regulation time left in the first period, the Cardinals set up the power play and were rewarded with a second goal from
Christina Tournas '25 at 1:35. The Panthers attempted to clear the puck from their zone but were thwarted by
Jenna Stevens '24 down on the other side of the Cardinals blue line. Stevens sent the puck back to Goeler-Slough in the neutral zone, allowing the winger to take the puck down and round the back of the goal. A quick crease pass to Tournas was deflected behind Wilson.
Through the second period the Panthers defense fought back, allowing no goals as both teams were held scoreless but still allowed 15 shots on goal.
Casey Messina '24 put away the final goal of the game in the 11
th minute of the final period on an unassisted shot. As the Panthers tried to regain solid possession, Messina picked the pocket of Jacqueline Martin at the far wall and sent the puck through the legs of another Panthers defender.
Caroline Kee'26 led all Cardinals with four shots on goals and won 10 draws off the faceoff. Molin followed with nine draw wins.
Guglielmi finished the afternoon in goal with 17 saves. At the other end, Wilson finished with 33 saves.
The Cardinals return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 20, when they head to Amherst for a 3 p.m. NESCAC matchup.
