NEW LONDON, Conn. – Despite big offensive outputs from
Shane Regan '25 and
Jackson Cormier '26, the Wesleyan men's basketball team fell victim to a red hot shooting performance from Mitchell as the Mariners won 95-79 on Thursday night. Wesleyan (10-6) falls to 0-5 this season in true road games while Mitchell (5-11) has won back-to-back games for the first time this season.
It was a career night for both Regan and Cormier, as the duo both finished with new career-high scoring totals. Regan totaled 29 points on 11-for-26 shooting with five rebounds and four assists while Cormier netted 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting with six rebounds in just 28 minutes.
Even with the production from the Cardinal backcourt, it wasn't enough to overcome a sensational night for the Mariners who shot 55.2 percent from the floor and 52.6 percent from behind the three-point arc, hitting 10 three-pointers on their way to a season-high point total. Jaylyn Clardy (34) and Dontae Pollard (28) combined for 62 of Mitchell's 95 points as the duo went 9-for-16 from three in the win.
The score was tied at 14 apiece more than six minutes into play as neither side wasted any time getting their offense started, but Mitchell then scored eight unanswered points in the next 2+ minutes to take an eight-point lead. Mitchell's lead stretched to 10 before the Cardinals managed to cut the deficit to five with 3:28 remaining. However, the Mariners went on another explosive run, scoring 10 straight points in a span of just 1:57 to take a 44-31 lead into halftime.
The three-point shot got Wesleyan back in the game as Regan,
Fritz Hauser '26, and Cormier all connected from deep within the first 3:02 of the second half, cutting the deficit to eight points. Mitchell's lead later shrunk to just five points as
Nicky Johnson '25 drove the lane, shouldering contact and hitting a layup to make it 57-52.
Wesleyan then had their chances as the held Mitchell scoreless for over three minutes, but came up empty on their next two possessions before the Mariners connected from deep. Just three minutes later, the Mariners stretched their lead back out to 14 points and led for double digits the rest of the way.
The Cardinals return home, where they are 5-1 on the season, but face a huge test in No. 5 ranked Trinity (17-0) who are the lone remaining undefeated team in the nation.
