HARTFORD, Conn. – Looking for an upset win on the road, the Wesleyan women's basketball team trailed by just two points with 8:03 remaining but a 10-1 Bantam run over the next 6+ minutes sealed a 67-56 Trinity victory on Saturday afternoon. Wesleyan (9-6, 1-3 NESCAC) has lost three straight road games while Trinity (11-5, 2-1 NESCAC) has won five of six.
Wesleyan kept the game close all throughout the first half, as the lead changed hands 12 times and the score was tied six times. Both teams couldn't miss in the first quarter, as each scored 22 with Wesleyan hitting 4-of-5 from behind the arc and going 6-for-6 from the free throw line while the Bantams shot 9-for-14 from the floor and hit three three-pointers to keep pace with the Cardinals.
The script flipped in the second quarter with just 19 combined points scored. The Cardinals were held to just one field goal in the quarter but still managed seven free throws while holding Trinity to 21.4 percent shooting on the other end.
It remained a one possession game into the second half as
Olivia Quinn '26 connected from deep to tie the score at 34-34. Wesleyan continued to answer makes from Trinity, as Quinn,
Kate King '27, and
Felicia Fongemie '27 all netted baskets before a 6-0 spurt from the Bantams gave Trinity their first double digit lead at 50-40 with 1:50 left in the quarter.
Wesleyan followed with a 5-0 run of their one to end the quarter, cutting the Bantam lead to five and later just two points after
Madi Gomez '24 hit a three-pointer to make it 50-48 with 8:03 left. That, however, was followed by a spell of nearly seven straight minutes without a field goal as Trinity went on a 10-1 run to hold a 60-50 lead with 1:21 left. The Bantams hit all their free throws down the stretch, finishing with the 67-56 victory.
Leading the way for Wesleyan was Quinn who scored 21 points, just one shy of her career-high, on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Fongemie netted 18 points of her own, as the tandem scored 39 of the team's 56 total points.
Turnovers proved costly as Wesleyan committed 22 in the game, which Trinity turned into 24 points. After going 4-of-5 from three in the first quarter, the Cardinals hit just 2-of-15 from long range in the remainder of the game.
The Bantams were led by Reilly Campbell who posted 21 points (9-13 FG) with 12 rebounds and two blocks. Theresa Twardosky added 13 points while Bria Fuller went for nine points and eight rebounds.
Wesleyan is back at home for their next game on Monday at 5 PM against New England College.
