MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan men's squash team earned a 9-0 win over Haverford at home on Sunday morning, with four of those wins coming in five sets. The Cardinals (5-8) snap a three-match losing streak while Haverford (2-6) has just one win in their last seven matches.
Unlike most 9-0 sweeps, the Cardinals were made to work for their triumph as four courts went into five sets in matches that all lasted at least 47 minutes. With the win, Wesleyan moves to 15-1 all-time against Haverford, winning nine consecutive matches in the all-time series.
Both
Preston Crawford '24 and
Jack Lungstrum '25 came from two sets down in their respective matches, with each match ending in a 3-2 win for Wesleyan. Crawford fell behind and rattled off three straight wins (11-5, 15-13, 11-9) at #5 to take the win. Lungstrum pulled out a dramatic win at #9, taking the deciding set 14-12 to seal his comeback win.
In a marathon match that lasted nearly an hour,
Zack Idinopulos '26 pulled out an incredible 27-25 fifth set win to deny the comeback bid of Daniel Braun at #8.
Abhinav Gupta '25 also won in five sets, with his match going 11-9, 2-11, 5-11, 11-3, 11-7 as he defeated Aaryaman Jaising at #2.
Toby Goldston '24 played the second-longest match on the day, winning in four sets (9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-4) in a match that lasted 50 minutes at #1 against Noah Tunis.
The remaining four matches all were decided in 3-0 sweeps for the Cardinals including
Ethan Yan '25 at #3,
Dhairya Shah '27 at #4,
Morgan Shatzman '25 at #6, and
Cole Zetterquist '24 at #7. Shah lost only 15 total points in his match win, defeating Peter Lehv 11-2, 11-7, 11-6 in a match that took just 19 minutes to finish.
Wesleyan heads into the final week of the regular season and are back in action on Tuesday at 5 PM with a match against Amherst from the Rosenbaum Squash Center.
