PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wesleyan wrestling team went 2-2 on the day at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Championships on Sunday, hosted by Johnson & Wales College. The #7 seed Cardinals defeated #10 seed Southern Maine in the opening round and prevailed over #8 seed Trinity in the seventh-place match later in the day.
Wesleyan broke through with a 28-17 first round win over Southern Maine, as the Cardinals came back from 11-4 down to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Shailen Savur '25 started the comeback with a 11-3 major decision win at 141 and Wesleyan later won six straight matches including the clincher at 197 with pinfall from
Dean Omirly '25 sealing the win.
CJ Shea '25 also won his match via pinfall at 157 while
Andrew Maiorini '25 won by 5-2 decision at 165,
Dario Molina '24 earned a 14-1 major decision win at 174, and
Aris Dashiell '25 won in a 15-0 tech fall at 184.

The Cardinals ran into a buzzsaw in #2 seed and No. 9 nationally-ranked Castleton in the quarterfinals, as the Spartans won 38-4. The lone win for Wesleyan in the match came from
Max Martinez '25 who defeated Andrew Marchese in a 14-5 major decision win at 133. Shea lost his match at 157 to Nate Camiscioli in a 7-4 sudden victory for the Spartan.

In the consolation flight, Wesleyan could not get past #6 seed Roger Williams as the Hawks claimed a 28-12 win. The Cardinals landed three wins as
Chris Hong '27 was victorious in a 4-3 decision at 125 while
Ike Guttentag '26 won in a 18-3 tech fall at 149 and Maiorini took down Anthony Ostrander at 165 in a 17-3 major decision.

In the seventh-place bout, it was the Cardinals who prevailed over #8 seed Trinity as Wesleyan earned a 28-21 win to head back to Middletown with two wins on the day. Martinez won his second bout of the day, earning a 12-5 decision win at 133.
Hayden Myers '27 posted a 11-0 major decision win at 141 while Shea won his match at 157 in a pinfall at 3:32. With the Cardinals trailed 15-13 in team scoring, Molina landed a crucial pinfall win in just 57 seconds, followed by Dashiell clinching a 10-5 decision win at 184 to put Wesleyan ahead 21-15. With two matches remaining, those nine points from Molina and Dashiell proved vital as Omirly won via forfeit at 197 to seal the match.
