Nicky Johnson Becomes Wesleyan’s All-Time Assists Leader in 90-56 Win over Yeshiva

Johnson passed Shasha Brown '13 for first place on the all-time list at Wesleyan with 396 career assists

NEW YORK, N.Y.Nicky Johnson '25 made history on Monday night, passing Shasha Brown '13 for first place all-time at Wesleyan in career assists, as the Cardinals went on to earn a dominating 90-56 road win over Yeshiva on Monday night. Wesleyan (11-7) earns their first true road win of the season while Yeshiva (10-7) loses for the second time in three games.

Johnson dished out five assists in tonight's lopsided win, earning his place atop the career assist record list at Wesleyan as he now has 396 across 72 career games. The NESCAC leader in assists per game (5.5) the past two seasons figures to continue adding to his record, which could come close to 600 at his per-game pace.

The win over the Maccabees was a dominant showing defensively from the Cardinals who held Yeshiva to a season-low point total. Prior to tonight, Yeshiva came in averaging 83.3 points per game and had scored at least 78 points in all but one game this season. The Maccabees were held to just 38.5 percent shooting, committed 15 turnovers, and grabbed just six offensive rebounds for the game.

Meanwhile, Wesleyan found their offense all night, shooting 52.9 percent overall despite a poor shooting performance from three as the Cardinals went just 3-of-22 (13.6 percent) from deep compared to 33-for-46 (71.7 percent) on their two-point field goal attempts. Wesleyan also committed just nine turnovers, as the Cardinals have turned the ball over less than 10 times in two straight games now.

Jackson Cormier '26 led a balanced attack with 21 points on 8-for-10 shooting with seven rebounds in just 25 minutes. Shane Regan '25 netted 16 points with five rebounds and five assists. Jared Langs '25 reached double figures with 12 points, four rebounds, and four blocks in just 18 minutes off the bench. Five more Cardinals finished with at least six points in the win.

The first half was back-and-forth for the opening 10 minutes and the Cardinals held just a five-point lead with 4:40 left in the half, that was until Wesleyan stormed ahead, riding a 12-0 run into halftime. Regan started the run with a three, followed by a Cormier three-point play and Langs scored two of the final three baskets of the half as Wesleyan led 48-31 at the break.

The run continued into the second half as nine more Cardinal points came until Yeshiva finally broke the spree, completing what was a 19-0 Wesleyan run. Even after the Maccabee basket, Wesleyan scored eight more unanswered points, stretching their run to 27-2 and leading 63-33. Wesleyan's lead grew to as many as 39 points in the late stages before ultimately closing out the 34-point road win.

Wesleyan heads back home for a crucial NESCAC weekend starting with a Friday night showdown against Amherst. The Mammoths claimed a 71-66 win back on January 2 in a Little Three non-conference showdown.
