Kane scores first-career goal as Cardinals fall on the road to Hamilton, 5-2

CLINTON, N.Y. – Junior defenseman Jack Kane scored his first-career goal as a member of the Wesleyan men's hockey team as he and Owen Sweet '25 led Wesleyan in a 5-2 loss to Hamilton College in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon from Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink.

A very quick goal from Hamilton's (12-5-1 overall, 7-4-1 NESCAC) Jackson Krock less than a minute into play after batting the puck in from the post to put the Continentals up 1-0 but the Cardinals (5-12-1 overall, 3-8-1 NESCAC) responded accordingly, tying the game up at 16:17 as Kane scored his first goal as a Cardinal. As Ethan Davidson '26 made his way out of the corner and out towards the top of the Continentals zone, the puck made its way to Kane out center at the line for his first shot on Jack Grant. Grant made the initial save but Kane snagged the rebound and sent the puck over Grant's left shoulder.

Through the first half of the second period the Continentals put up another two goals, one from Krock and the other from Logan Greene, giving them a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. But with less than a second remaining on the clock, Sweet scored his sixth goal of the season to cut the lead to one goal. Davidson made a wide shot on Grant with the puck rebounding off a skate and making its way back to Vaclav Hes '24 just outside the left post for another shot on Grant, Grant making the save before Sweet launched the puck over Grant's left shoulder and into the corner from out left of the goal.

Hamilton's Deven de Vries and Noah Leibl each found the back of the net for the Continentals in the third period to finalize the game.

Sweet led all Cardinals with seven shots on goal while Davidson finished the afternoon with a two-point game. From the faceoff, DJ Dixon '24 finished with 12 draw wins, Hayden Hanes '27 with seven.

In goal for the Cardinals, Marc Smith '24 put up 35 saves after previously setting a program record against Hamilton on Dec. 2. Grant finished with 33 saves for the Continentals.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Feb. 1, when they travel to Middlebury for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
