AMHERST, MA. – Combining for five goals in the last three outings for the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team,
Connor Sutherland '27 and
DJ Dixon '24 each tallied a goal against Amherst College in a 3-2 NESCAC loss on Friday night from Amherst's Orr Rink.
Awarded a power play early in the second period as the Cardinals (5-11-1 overall 3-7-1 NESCAC) were called for a holding minor, the Mammoths (11-6-0 overall, 6-5-0 NESCAC) made quick work of their extra man advantage and got on the board first at 13:40 with a goal by Andrew Carmody.
Sutherland, scoring his third goal of the season, opened the third period 41 seconds after the puck drop to tie the game up at one. Jumpstarting the play in the Cardinals zone, Sutherland passed out to linemate
Owen Sweet '26 at center ice as they rushed the Mammoth's defensive zone. Sweet took the first shot from out high but Alex Wisco was able to make the initial save. Snagging the rebound on Sweet's shot, Sutherland batted the puck over the goal line before being shoved into Wisco from behind. Less than a minute later Michael Gallagher gave the Mammoths a 2-1 lead.
The Mammoths took a two-goal lead at 6:51 as the Cardinals were called for another holding minor with Ryan Tucker scoring the third goal of the night. With five minutes remaining in regulation, Dixon cut the score to just one goal after picking up the puck on a turnover at center ice. Whipping around to the Mammoth's defense, Dixon scored on a backhanded shot at the left post.

Erik Voloshin '24 had a 30 save evening. Wisco made 21 saves for the Mammoths.
Dixon and
Danny Judge '26 led the Cardinals from the faceoff circle, Dixon with 12 draw wins, Judge with 10.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they head to Hamilton College for a 3 p.m. NESCAC matchup.
