Cardinals second-half comeback forces overtime draw with No. 7 Hamilton

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – In a triumphant second-half comeback that saw two late goals from Caroline Kee '26 and Christina Tournas '25, the Wesleyan women's hockey team forced a 2-2 overtime draw with No. 7 Hamilton College in NESCAC action on Friday night from Spurrier-Snyder Arena in the first of a two-game weekend series.

The Continentals (11-3-3 overall, 4-3-2 NESCAC) got on the board early, just five and a half minutes into the opening action with a goal from Emily Ferguson. Ferguson's shot from out deep in the Cardinals (8-6-3 overall, 3-4-2 NESCAC) zone went high on Rei Halloran '23, hitting the left corner. The Continentals would hold the one goal lead into the second period before Claire McGennis would give them the two-goal lead at 15:17 of the second period after stuffing the puck behind Halloran from the left post.

With less than 20 seconds remaining in the second period, Kee put away the first goal for the Cardinals after a line change puck dump was picked up by Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23 and brought into the left post. Goeler-Slough made a short pass from the post to Kee at the top of the goal crease for the tally.

At 12:56 of the third period the Cardinals power play unit was sent out for the second opportunity of the evening after the Continentals were called for a tripping minor. Goeler-Slough, with the puck out at the far wall, sent the puck on a cross-ice pass to Aimee Seppenwolde '26 on the opposite side of the unit for Seppenwolde to take the initial shot. Teagan Brown made the save but Tournas stole the rebounded puck and slashed the puck over the line through the gathered crowd at the goal.

Unable to score in the final minutes of the third period, Tournas' goal sent the game to overtime but a 2-2 draw was the final score.

Rei Halloran made a season-high 38 saves in goal for the Cardinals as the Continentals held a 40-29 shot differential on goal. Halloran made 21 of those saves in the second period before the Cardinals rallied back with 14 shots on goal in the third period. Brown made 27 saves for the Continentals.

From the faceoff, Kee lead all Cardinals with 10 draw wins and was followed by Amelia Molin '27 with eight wins.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they host Hamilton in the second game of a the weekend series with puck drop at 3 p.m.
