Women’s squash downs No. 19 Bates in 5-4 upset

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Picking up their first win over a national ranked opponent this season, the Wesleyan women's squash team left the Rosenbaum Squash Center victorious on Saturday afternoon after a 5-4 defeat of No. 19 Bates College in NESCAC action.

The Cardinals made quick work of the Bobcats with Aanya Anand '26 at No. 4 defeating Sumairaa Suleman 3-1. Suleman took the first game of the match 11-9 but Anand finished the match off with 11-8, 11-7, and 11-9 game wins.

In the No. 5 slot, Jaclyn Dichter '26 swept Tia Billimoria 3-0. Dichter ran the match games with 11-2, 14-12, and 11-4 wins.

Leandra Sze '26 pulled out a 3-1 win over Angelina Amastal at No. 7. Sze won the first game 11-7 but fell to Amastal in the second 11-9. Sze finished off the match with 11-5 and 11-7 wins.

A second match sweep went to Portia Pliam '25, going 3-0 against Dainalee Velez at No. 8. Pliam had the shortest match of the afternoon, finishing off Velez 11-1, 11-0, and 11-5.

The final match win came from the No. 9 spot with Marangela James '24 sweeping Hollis Hale 3-0. Through all three games, James went a final 12-10, 11-8, and 11-6.

The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, Jan. 28, when they travel to No. 14 Williams in their final matchup of the regular season beginning at 5 p.m.
