Cardinals Draw Scoreless with East Conn. in Non-Conference Action

WILLIMANTIC, CT. – In their final non-conference matchup of the regular season, the Wesleyan men's soccer team drew scoreless with Eastern Connecticut State University 0-0 on Wednesday night from Eastern Connecticut's Rowan Soccer Field.

The Cardinals (5-3-5 overall, 2-3-2 NESCAC) kept a slow start as they entered the match against their final non-conference opponent of the regular season. Despite the initial back and forth play, the Cardinals kept relative control of the pace over the Warriors (3-7-4 overall) throughout the first 45 minutes of action. The Cardinals' first opportunity to open the scoring came in the 24th minute as Will Martin '26, positioned inside the near line, made a cross from the goal line to Chris Porte '25 for a header that went wide.

As the Cardinals were making another push inside the Warriors' zone, Joshwin Jennings '27 had another prime scoring chance out high, but his shot fell out of bounds and wide of Nathan Yeich in goal. Barely a minute later a header from Colin Campbell '25 looked like it was going to be a first goal but Yeich punched the ball over the crossbar at the last second.

While the Warriors pushed for their own first goal in the final 10 minutes, Zach Feldman '27 and the Cardinals' defense held tight to keep the opportunities to a minimum. With just barely a minute remaining in the half, the Warriors almost net the opening goal as Sean Cafferty was able to shoot on a slide from the center of the box but angled the ball wide of the right post.

Entering the half, Feldman and the defense allowed just two shots total on Mathis Blanc '26, as the offense was led by Mateo Neighbors '25 and Aiden Londergan '27 with two shots apiece. Yeich faced seven shots in goal.

Once again controlling the ball management, the Cardinals began the second half with a goal line pass from Porte to Calder Truesdale '28 at the right post, but Truesdale's shot would go wide. Truesdale followed with a handful of chances from inside. Jennings gained another chance as Porte found Truesdale, but Jennings' shot from out left was stopped by Jack Harmon now in goal for the Warriors.

Porte would get another shot moments later, missing the crossbar by inches as Harmon was forced out, leaving the goal empty. Pressing in the final five minutes, the Cardinals were relentless in an attempt to walk away with a goal. Martin from the right post was stonewalled on a header with just 10 seconds remaining on the clock.

Jennings led the Cardinals with five shots total, three of which were stopped by Yeich and Harmon. As the Cardinals outshot the Warriors 26-2 overall, Blanc finished with just one save. Yeich and Harmon combined for six saves for the Warriors.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26, when they host Colby College in NESCAC action at 2 p.m. at Jackson Field.
